Special program launched to give Covid vaccine to university students currently studing in universities

A special program to vaccinate university students within universities will be launched from the 11th of this month, said the Director General of Health Services, Dr. Asela Gunawardena. People are waiting in long ques to buy milk powder

Media reported that customers are waiting in long queues to buy a packet of milk powder in front of a local milk powder outlet in a ground floor building of a government institution in Nuwara Eliya. Only the limited quantity of milk powder supplied to the milk powder outlet by the milk powder factory in Ambewela is sold to consumers. The milk powder factory issues about 400 packets of milk powder three days a week through the outlet. A large number of people were waiting in queues infront of theoutlet even before the outleopeninged. There have several instances where some customers waiting in queues have not even been able to buy at least a one packet of milk powder.

 Abdul Razak Gurna of Tanzania has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. The Nobel Prize in Literature is awarded by the Swedish Academy. A group is being prosecuted in connection with the death of an Air Force officer

Fifteen people have been charged in connection with the death of a South Korean air force officer. According to foreign sources, the officer had committed suicide after being sexually abused by a colleague. It is said that disciplinary action has been taken against 12 other Air Force personnel for attempting to cover up the incident. The commander of the South Korean Air Force also resigned in June due to public outcry over the incident.

Nurses strike for five hours today

Several health service unions are scheduled to launch a trade union action today (08) based on several demands including Kovid relief allowances. The trade union action will be implemented from 07.00 am to 12.30 pm, said the President of the Government Nurses Association, Saman Ratnapriya.

Five members of the same family were died in a fire

Five members of the same family were died in a fire that broke out in a temporary house yesterday night, Ragala Police stated. The deceased have been identified as two children aged 1 and 12, their mother, grandfather and grandmother and they wereresidents of the central part of Ragala Estate in the Ragala Police Division, Police stated that the fire had started at around 10.30 pm on the 7th and that all the five persons who were in the house at that time had been burnt to death. A birthday party of the deceased 01-year-old girl was held on the night of (07) and a 26-year-old member of the family was out of the house because he was drunk and was not injured. The bodies of the victims have been kept at the same location until the Magistrate conducts inquiries and the Ragala Police are conducting investigations into the incident.
Upcountry vegetable farms distroyed due to heavy rain

A group of vegetable farmers in the western slopes of the central hills say that they have been severely affected by the recent heavy rains which have destroyed their vegetable crops. Speaking further, a group of vegetable farmers in Bogawantalawa and Tinsin said that their vegetable crops had been destroyed due to the heavy rains in these areas. He said that although he had taken various loans to cultivate vegetables, he was unable to repay the loans due to the destruction of those vegetable crops due to the heavy rains. They also said that they had been in a state of panic due to the curfew imposed by the government for more than a month due to the covid.
