Can provincial council elections be held?

The Leader of the House, Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has stated that the Attorney General is of the view that provincial council elections cannot be held according to the old system without passing a new bill.

 Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, in his capacity as the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Select Committee to identify amendments to the Elections and Elections Structure and Rules and to make necessary amendments in this regard, has made this announcement to its members.
