Sri Lanka and China Report Significant Export Growth in September

Sri Lanka’s merchandise exports surged by 21.66% in September 2026, reaching $1.38 billion year-on-year, contributing to an overall positive trend in global trade driven by strong demand for high-tech goods.

This notable increase, alongside robust export figures from China, underscores a period of resilient international trade despite ongoing geopolitical complexities and varied regional performances. The World Trade Organization (WTO) has consequently revised its global merchandise trade growth forecast upwards, reflecting the impact of burgeoning sectors like artificial intelligence (AI).

Sri Lanka’s Export Sector Demonstrates Strength

Sri Lanka’s total exports, encompassing both goods and services, grew by 17.23% in September 2026 to $1.69 billion compared to the same month last year, according to data from the export promotion office. This performance marks a significant boost for the island nation’s economy.

Key drivers behind this surge include electrical and electronic components, which recorded an impressive 88.35% year-on-year growth. Within this category, insulated wires and cables saw an 82.59% increase, while switches, boards, and panels rose by 31.49%. Exports of telephone sets and audio/video equipment also experienced a substantial 234.82% growth.

The spices sector also played a vital role, with overall export earnings increasing by 73.19%. Pepper exports, in particular, saw a remarkable 165.38% rise, and cinnamon exports grew by 68.27%. Rubber and rubber-based products contributed significantly, with earnings up by 33.68%.

While many sectors flourished, some faced headwinds. Tea export earnings saw a slight decline of 1.38% year-on-year, and coconut-based products experienced an 8.88% decrease. Apparel and textiles, traditionally a major export, recorded a more modest growth of 3.46% in September 2026.

For the first nine months of 2026, Sri Lanka’s total exports reached $13.61 billion, a 5.04% increase over the corresponding period in 2025. The Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) emphasized that this sustained growth is crucial for strengthening the country’s international market position and progressing towards its national target of $36 billion in annual export earnings by 2030.

Major export destinations showed varied growth. Exports to the United States increased by 18.06%, while shipments to India rose by 29.65%. Exports to the European Union also saw a 1.92% increase in September.

China’s Export Boom Signals Global Tech Demand

In a parallel development, China reported a substantial 36.3% year-on-year jump in exports for September 2026, reaching $447.2 billion. Imports also grew by 31%, resulting in a record monthly trade surplus of $133.53 billion. This surge was largely fueled by robust global demand for high-tech products, with semiconductor exports rising by 108.1% in value and car exports also experiencing rapid growth. Demand for AI infrastructure and related electronic components played a significant role in this performance.

Despite China’s strong export figures, domestic consumer spending within the country has remained sluggish, presenting a nuanced picture of its economic recovery.

Global Trade Outlook Strengthens, Services Face Headwinds

The World Trade Organization, in its October 2026 Global Trade Outlook and Statistics report, raised its forecast for world merchandise trade volume growth to 3.9% in 2026, a significant increase from its March projection of 1.9%. This upward revision primarily reflects the strong global investment in AI-related goods, such as semiconductors and servers, which accounted for 47% of the growth in world merchandise trade value during the first half of 2026.

Conversely, the WTO lowered its forecast for commercial services trade volume growth to 3.3% for 2026, down from 4.8% in its earlier projection. This reduction is attributed to disruptions caused by the Middle East conflict, particularly impacting transport and travel services.

Mixed Picture for Major Economies

In the United States, the advance goods trade deficit for September is anticipated to widen. Continuum Economics projects the deficit to reach $137.0 billion, up from $132.1 billion in August, largely due to an ongoing AI investment boom driving increased imports. The official US September trade data is expected to be released today, October 28, 2026.

The Euro area reported a goods trade deficit of €16.1 billion in August 2026, a notable increase from a €1.7 billion deficit in August 2025. While exports to the rest of the world rose by 9.9%, imports grew by a higher 16.7%. September data for the Euro area is yet to be released.

Similarly, the United Kingdom’s September trade figures are scheduled for release on November 12, 2026. In August, the UK’s goods trade deficit had narrowed to £18.01 billion from £19.30 billion in July, with the overall trade deficit standing at £0.92 billion.
