Leading drug trafficker arrested in Tangalle

 Police have arrested a leading drug dealer and his accomplice with nearly Rs. 15 million. The suspects were arrested in the Tangalle area on a tip off received by the STF, police said. The drug trafficking was carried out using multi-purpose fishing vessels by sea and the arrested suspect is said to be the pilot of a multi-day fishing vessel used for the smuggling. The 32-year-old suspect, a resident of Seenimodara, was found in possession of Rs. 514,000 in cash, 377 grams of gold jewelery, 10 grams of heroin and a mobile phone. The main suspect involved in the racket has fled the area and the 60-year-old father of the suspect has been arrested on a charge of aiding and abetting, police said. A foreign made pistol, two magazines, Rs. 9,002,800, a satellite phone and a mobile phone were found in the house of a suspect in the Gonapinuwala area. The suspects were handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau for further investigations, police said

US tragedy kills 12, including 8 children

A fire in an apartment complex in Philadelphia, USA has killed 12 people. Eight children were among the dead.  The fire broke out in a three-storey building and 26 people were on board at the time. However, it took firefighters nearly an hour to control the blaze. The cause of the fire has not been revealed yet and the security forces are conducting further investigations into the incident.

Another covid variant with 46 mutations identified

Another covid variety has been identified in France. Medical experts say it is confusing that another covid variety has emerged as the Omicron variant spreads around the world.  It is estimated that the new variety has 46 mutations and can spread rapidly. Twelve people have been reported infected in southeastern France so far with the new strain of B.1.640.2 and it is also known as IHU. The first infected person to be identified was identified as a native of Cameroon, West Africa. He was also reported to have received both doses of the vaccine.

Australia cancelled the visa of the world’s greatest tennis player

 Australian authorities have suspended the visa of world number one Novak Djokovic to attend the Australian Open TennisTurnerment.  Australian authorities have informed Djokovic, who arrived in Australia and stayed at Melbourne Airport that he has not met the required entry rules. According to the foreign media, he will be deported from the country. Djokovic will be sent to a government-run detention centre until a seat can be reserved for a flight departing from the country.  Australian tennis authorities have agreed to grant him relief for “not getting vaccinated” to participate in the Australian Open Tennis Tournament But it was strongly opposed by the Australian people. Djokovic is a person who refused to receive the vaccine and was once infected with covid.

Broker arrested for sending woman to domestic service

It is reported that a woman from the Kandy area has been sent to Dubai to work as a housemaid on a tourist visa without registering with the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment. According to the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment, she was assaulted and pushed to the ground on the second floor of the building after she arrived at the Foreign Employment Agency due to a problem at work. When the woman arrived at the agency’s foreign employment agency, a woman named “Sama” who worked there beat her, forcing her to go back to work at the house and pushing her down from the second floor after she refused. The bones in her arms and legs were broken when she fell to the ground. She is currently in the island and is in a critical condition. A complaint has been lodged with the Kandy Provincial Office of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment and investigations are underway by the Special Investigation Division at the Head Office. Accordingly, the broker who had smuggled the woman abroad was arrested in the Gampola area and produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court. He was released on a cash bail of Rs. 5,000 and a personal bail of Rs. 500,000.

Three individuals arrested for assembling a bus suspected to have been used for a criminal purpose.

Police Special Task Force (STF) has arrested three persons for assembling a bus suspected to have been used for a criminal purpose. The arrested persons are aged 39, 46, 53, residents of Colombo 10 and Colombo 12.  The suspects were apprehended during a raid carried out in the Sangharaja Mawatha area in the Maradana Police Division on a tip off received by the STF Headquarters. Police also seized several items including an oxygen tank and a gas cylinder with a bus with the number plates removed and the internal parts disassembled. The arrested suspects and the seized items have been handed over to the Maradana Police for further investigations.

North Korea fired a Missile

  North Korea has fired a ballistic missile today (05), according to international media reports.  The missile was fired off the east coast of the country, and the South Korean leader laid the foundation stone for a new railway line. South Korean President Moon Jae-in has said that the railways, which are currently divided between North and South Korea, could one day be reunited. But the international media said the missile test showed that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s policy was in the opposite frame than South Korean leader.
