Farmers in long queues for fertilisers

Farmers cultivating vegetables in the Nuwara Eliya area have been waiting in front of the Nuwara Eliya Agrarian Services Center offices to obtain chemical fertilizers since early morning yesterday, but they have not received the chemical fertilizers that meet their demand.

There are over ten thousand farmers who cultivate vegetables on a large scale and a small scale in 29 Grama Niladhari Divisions in the Nuwara Eliya area and they have been cultivating vegetables for a long time using chemical fertilizers as a livelihood.

An official of the Nuwara Eliya Agrarian Services Center stated that 100 bundles of TDM fertilizer, 50 bundles of urea fertilizer and 200 bundles of fertilizer used as substitute fertilizer for green manure were received at the Nuwara Eliya Agrarian Services Center yesterday.

The vegetable growers in the Nuwara Eliya area who had come to obtain chemical fertilizer on payment stated that the Department of Agrarian Services had issued fertilizer to several farmers who were on the waiting list yesterday and that the fertilizer released was chemical fertilizer used for paddy cultivation could not be used for vegetable cultivation and the released urea fertilizer was not sufficient for his cultivation.
