 International attention has been paid to the operations of Yuan Wang 05 in China again.  The Hindustan Times had reported today that the Chinese satellite and ballistic missile tracking ship Yuan Wang 5, which left Hambantota port on August 22, was currently mapping the ocean floor 400 nautical miles south-southeast of Deundara Point on the southern tip of Sri Lanka. After leaving Sri Lanka, the Chinese hi-tech ship was scheduled to sail to Jiangyin Port in Shanghai, China. A statement from the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in India about the Chinese ship

Mr Milinda Moragoda, Sri Lankan High Commissioner of India, says that there is no doubt that the incident of a Chinese ship anchoring at Hambantota port was a problem between India and Sri Lanka. He said that we are facing the problem of how to build a framework to avoid such problems in the future and to prevent breaches of trust through such problems. Mr Milinda Moragoda said this while speaking to The Hindu newspaper The Sri Lanka High Commissioner has said this a few days after the Chinese ship Yuan Wang Five, which can track satellites and missiles, left Hambantota port.  Mr Milinda Moragoda said that the Government of India has been informed about this controversy.

According to UNICEF, Sri Lanka ranks 6th in the world in terms of child malnutrition. The south Asia Regional Director Mr George Lareya Adjei says that the economic crisis in Sri Lanka has had a severe impact on children suffering from poverty. Mr George Lareya Adjei, South Asia Regional Director of UNICEF, who is visiting Sri Lanka, says that one out of three children in Sri Lanka is currently in need of some urgent assistance. He mentioned that due to the current crisis situation, children’s going to school has been hampered and they have lost the delicious and fresh food that they had before the crisis. The South Asia Regional Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund said that families are skipping their daily meals due to lack of ability to buy food. It was stated that children in this country go to bed hungry not knowing how they will get their next meal.

Economic Crisis in Sri Lanka-The generator that was stopped in Norochchole Power Plant is back on the national system

The first generator of the Norochchole power plant, which was inactive, has been reconnected to the national system after repairs.  The Ceylon Electricity Board stated that, accordingly, a capacity of 600 MW will be added to the national system from the Norochchole power plant. However, the Electricity Board mentioned that the repair work of the second generator of the plant is still going on. At present, 50% of the daily electricity generation is generated by hydropower.  Meanwhile, the Public Utilities Commission (PUCSL) has informed the General Manager of the Electricity Board to inform about the possibility of reducing the daily power cuts due to the reconnection of the first generator that was disabled in Norochchole to the system.  However, electricity will be cut for 3 hours on the island today as well.

Trade and Consumer Safety Minister Naleen Fernando says that a decision will be taken next week regarding the reduction of chicken and fish prices. He mentioned that the Consumer Affairs Authority has the data regarding the price of chicken meat in the market and the cost of it.  Meanwhile, Minister Nalin Fernando stated that immediate steps will be taken to reduce the prices of cement, wire and iron.
