A docter shouts and chased away othe officials at the vaccination site

Development officers involved in the corona vaccination program at Lenadora Hospital in Dambulla Divisional Secretariat yesterday (8) were chased out of the vaccination site by a doctor involved in vaccination. The Dambulla Divisional Secretary has been informed in a letter that they will withdraw from the vaccination program from today. The letter urges the development officers, who are corona officers with minimal facilities, to pay attention to the request for health care, but the authorities ignored it and to create a work environment for development officers.

United States has warned its citizens not to travel to Sri Lanka

Reuters reports that the United States has warned its citizens not to travel to several countries, including Sri Lanka. It has named Sri Lanka as the fourth highest risk country. The government is urging Americans to refrain from traveling to such destinations.

Dr. Ashoka Gunaratne has also resigned as a member of the Corona Suppression Technical Committee

Anesthesiologist Dr. Ashoka Gunaratne has also resigned as a member of the Corona Suppression Technical Committee. He stated that he resigned from the committee yesterday. He said that he had resigned as he did not think it would benefit the committee and that he had been the chairman of the anesthesia association and had been a member of the committee for a year and a half. He has resigned in protest of the decision of the Ministry of Health and the Director General of Health Services to take a decision on vaccination without a scientific basis.

President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has instructed to seize illegal the warehouses of large scale paddy mill owners and release their stocks of rice to the market

President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has instructed Trade Minister Bandula Gunawardena to seize the warehouses of large scale paddy mill owners and release their stocks of rice and paddy to the market. These instructions were given at a Cabinet meeting chaired by the President on the 6th. Meanwhile, large scale paddy mill owners had earlier informed the President that they could not control the price of rice due to the accumulation of middle paddy. However, the Consumer Affairs Authority has found hundreds of thousands of metric tons of paddy in unregistered warehouses and placed it under the Commissioner of Essential Services. The government has also rejected a request made by large scale paddy mill owners to convert the stocks of paddy into rice.  Accordingly, it is planned to hand over the paddy stocks owned by large scale paddy mill owners under the Commissioner of Essential Services to the small scale paddy mill owners and release rice to the market this week.

PCR and rapid antigen testing to diagnose corona infections is limited with a new circular – The Sri Lanka Public Health Inspectors Association

The Sri Lanka Public Health Inspectors Association says PCR and rapid antigen testing to diagnose corona infections is limited. Its chairman Upul Rohana points out that due to this, the spread of corona cannot be assessed by the society based on the daily reported number of infections. He also said that the Director General of Health Services has issued a circular restricting the testing of people with symptoms and first class affiliations. Accordingly, the tests are being carried out only for a very limited number of people, he said, adding that there may be several times as many infections in the general society as reported. Accordingly, he said, official statistics alone could not provide a proper estimate of the spread of the corona pandemic.

Jayantha Ketagoda will be re-appointed to fill the vacancy if Ajith Nivard Cabraal resigns

According to unofficial sources, former MP Jayantha Ketagoda will be re-appointed to fill the vacancy if Ajith Nivard Cabraal resigns from the post of Member of Parliament as well as the post of Minister of State for Finance.  Although Jayantha Ketagoda was appointed as the National List Member of Parliament for the Sri Lanka People’s Front, he resigned to allow Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa to enter Parliament.

Foreign investors are selling their shares in the Colombo Stock Exchange

Foreign investors are selling their shares in the Colombo Stock Exchange fast rate. The shares they have sold so far this year are worth over Rs. 41 billion.  It is approximately US $ 200 million. Stock market analysts say that foreigners are selling their shares due to declining foreign exchange reserves, rupee instability, delays in selling revenue and large government intervention.

Don’t buy vehicles at unreasonable prices

Indika Sampath Meranchige, President of the Automobile Importers’ Association says that the increase in car prices is being carried out by a small group of people who are involved in the vehicle business and newcomers to it. He also said that most of the auto traders are facing severe difficulties due to the current situation. He also points out that to control the current increase in vehicle prices, people should not buy vehicles at unreasonable prices in a catastrophic time. If so, the price hike would be curtailed, he said.
