Health guidelines issued to reopen schools

Relevant health guidelines regarding the reopening of schools have been handed over to the Secretary to the Ministry of Education by the Director General of Health Services.  Accordingly, the Ministry of Education states that the opening of schools will be done in accordance with those guidelines. The Ministry of Education will issue guidelines for opening schools today, said Dr. Hemantha, Media Spokesman for the Ministry of Health.

The Lankathilake statue house in Polonnaruwa has been damaged by lightning. Lightning that exploded on the night of the 18th has also struck the Lankathilaka statue house in the Archaeological site. According to the Archaeological Department, the statue was found to have been damaged by lightning. They also say they are investigating whether the walls and pillars of the building exploded.

A 71-year-old dead after collided with a vehicle belonging to the Nawalapitiya SLTB Depot

A 71-year-old father of two has died after collided with a vehicle belonging to the Nawalapitiya SLTB Depot, Nawalapitiya Police said. The deceased has been identified as Sarath Kumara Piyadasa (71), a resident of Penithuduwa, Nawalapitiya. The victim was collided with the vehicle near the Nawalapitiya Anuruddha Primary School. While the driver of the vehicle was fleeing without reporting the accident to the police, officers of the Nawalapitiya Police Traffic Division had chased him and arrested the suspect driver. The suspect was under influence of alcohol at the time of his arrest and succumbed to his injuries after being admitted to the Nawalapitiya District General Hospital, Nawalapitiya Police said.

Minister of State Channa Jayasumana today unveiled in Parliament a list of drugs that were imported at very high prices during the last  government, although they cost very little in the market. He also said that the CID would be informed to conduct an investigation into these purchases.  He also said that the purchase of these drugs was referred to as emergency purchases and that they were purchased at exorbitant prices.  The document tabled by him in Parliament is as follows.

The Health Trade Union Confederation has decided to hold a protest campaign today

The Health Trade Union Confederation has decided to hold a protest campaign in hospitals and health institutions across the country from 12.00 noon to 1.00 pm today.  Saman Ratnapriya, President of the Government Nurses Association, said that the protest was launched against the cuts in health care allowances and corona control facilities.

Opening liquor shops put society at a high risk of creating a new cluster of the corona- Health officials in the North

  Health officials in the North say that opening a bar with the Corona risk in the North at the time when the quarantine curfew has been imposed could put another bunch of people at risk of infecting with corona.  Liquor enthusiasts in the North were queuing up in Jaffna, Vavuniya, Mannar, Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi without taking any health precautions due to the simultaneous opening of bars and rumours that the bars would be kept open for only a short time. Meanwhile, the owners of four liquor stores in the Vavuniya district did not follow proper hygiene measures and the health officials took steps to seal the four liquor stores and a large number of people lined up at the remaining open bars in Vavuniya. Police also arrived to control the situation and arrested 13 persons for violating the quarantine rules without following health precautions. Health officials in the North further point out that with the current situation in the Northern Province, there is a risk of an increase in corona infection.

When will the wrecked Express Pearl ship removed?

The Marine Environmental Protection Authority (MEPA) says it needs to make sure there is still fuel onboard to evacuate the wrecked Express Pearl ship. The chairperson of the authority, Attorney-at-Law Dharshani Lahandapura, said that if there was any fuel, the company that was removing the ship would be informed that steps should be taken to remove it to other tanks. According to the reports, the owner of the ship has called for international tenders for the removal of the ship. The tender application period ends on the 21st of this month. At the same time, the company that currently serves as the ship’s trustee has largely completed a seabed survey. The company hope to find out how much debris remains on the seabed, and at the same time the company selected for the removal of the ship will begin the removal of the ship, most likely in October or early November.

Thushan Gunawardena, Executive Director of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) says that two ministers are upset and are planning to remove him from his posts due to the action taken against the CWE for fraud and corruption. He said that his life was being threatened with death and that he would resign from the post to save his life after informing the President in a letter. He said that the recent reason for this pressure on him was to continue to complain to the relevant authorities against the garlic fraud. He said he had learned that they were preparing to appoint a henchman to the post after he resigned, adding that the authority would then become a private company of the two ministers.
