Monk convicted of child abuse dies of poisoning

Fifty-one-year-old monk has died after consuming poison inside a prison bus following the verdict of a case being heard in the Hambantota High Court yesterday (9th), prison sources said. The case was heard on three charges and the monk was found guilty of the three charges and sentenced to Rs. 775,000 and sentenced to 30 years imprisonment. A prison official said the monk later died. The autopsy was scheduled to be conducted at the Hambantota General Hospital yesterday (10th).

LTTE photo displayed of an army vehicle on Independence Day

It is reported that a photograph of LTTE fighters was displayed and decorated in an army display car carrying war heroes during the recent Sri Lanka Independence Day parade. War Heroes” were photographed around this vehicle, which was given a prominent place in the parade depicting Sri Lankan Army militants.  One photo shows an LTTE soldier fighting against the Sri Lankan Army in the September 2008 battle at Wannerikkulam. The photo, which was allegedly released by the LTTE, was posted on the TamilNet website at the time. The Sri Lankan Army did not know what this photo was and had included it in the war heroes’ display car. An error occurred while selecting the photo. The photo was leaked by the Tamil Guardian website and has since come to the attention of the Sri Lankan military. The Minister of Health Keheliya Rambukwella states that details regarding the salaries and allowances of those working in the health sector will be published in a full page in the newspapers.  He said this while he was commenting on the protest being done by health professionals these days. “In the next few days, a full page advertisement will be placed in the newspapers regarding the salaries and allowances of those who are currently in the health sector. Then everyone will be able to get an idea about the salary of these people. The average nurse works overtime for about 400 hours. If we take it for 150 hours, a third grade nurse would normally pay Rs. 1,02,000 and  a first grade nurse paying Rs. 180,000”

Plantation workers are protesting requesting wages

A group of plantation workers at the Kotagala Plantation Company’s Chryslas Farm plantation staged a 10-day protest demanding the reopening of the closed tea factory and the payment of their full wages commensurate with the number of days worked. Plantation workers at the Kotagala Chryslas Farm estate went on strike for 10 days, gathering in front of the estate’s tea factory.  The Estate Authority has closed the tea factory on its estate, claiming it has been undergoing renovations for about a year. The protesting plantation workers at the Kotagala Chryslas Farm estate say that the number of working days per month at the tea estate will be reduced due to the failure of the estate authorities to reopen the factory.

Dulan Sameera Sampath alias Abba, a large scale drug dealer has been killed in a shootout with the Police Special Task Force. The shooting took place in the Egoda Uyana area in Moratuwa this morning. A police officer who was injured in the shooting has also been hospitalized. The smuggler, who was seriously injured in the shooting, died after being hospitalized.

The National Athletics Selection Tournament begins today in Colombo

 The National Athletics Selection Tournament begins today at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo. The tournament will be held for 03 days. This is the first selection of the 2022 Asian Games and the Asian Youth Games. According to the Health Guidelines, arrangements have been made to hold the tournament with the participation of a limited number of athletes, said the President of the Sri Lanka Athletic Association, Major General Palitha Fernando. More than 800 athletes from both the senior and junior divisions will take part in the tournament.

Chamari Athapaththu included in the ICC cricketer of the month list

The International Cricket Council (ICC) released the names of the players who will be selected for the International Cricket Council (ICC) last month. Sri Lanka Cricket captain Chamari Atapattu has been nominated for the category, in addition to West Indies cricketer Deandra Dottin and England captain Heather Knight. Dewald Brevis, a South African under-19 player, was named in the International Cricket Council’s Players of the Month this year, along with Bangladesh’s Ebadot Hossain and South African Keegan Petersen.

Pope sends a special message to Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday Attack

The Pope has expressed his full support for the struggle of the Sri Lanka Catholic Church for justice for the victims of the Easter Sunday attack. Regarding the government’s investigation into the Easter Sunday attack, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith has conveyed his concerns to the Pope. Father Syril Gamini also suggests that the CID should question former Attorney General Dappula de Livera’s statement that there was a conspiracy behind the Easter Sunday Attack . He also said that the Catholic Church needs to implement all the recommendations made by the Presidential Commission to Investigate the Easter Sunday attack. He has also stated that he will not hesitate to take the issue to the international community if justice for the victims is further delayed.

Pushpika de Silvas respond to crown removal Mrs world organisation had praised Caroline Jury

Controversial 2021 Mrs Sri Lanka beauty queen Pushpika de Silva has stated that she does not accept removing her crown and that an individual opinion cannot change a jury decision. She said this in response to a letter published by Mrs Sri Lanka for Mrs world National Organizer Chandimal Jayasinghe regarding the removing of her crown. Pushpika says that she has not received the crown yet and that it is in a jewellery shop and therefore she is not wearing a crown to remove. She argues that she has not yet responded to the legal documents sent to her and that the crown cannot be removed in such a context. however, some media reported that the head of Mrs World organisation in America had made a note praising removing Pushpika’s crown. She also praised the work of Caroline Jury
