Ishini Wickramasinghe has resigned from the post of Director-General of the National Zoological Gardens Department.
She has already submitted her resignation letter. Wildlife Minister Wimalaweera Dissanayake also confirms this.
It is reported that she has resigned in protest of the government’s decision to hand over some of the elephants currently being held by the government to their original owners.
Several parties claim that the new decision has the potential to return illegally captured elephants to traffickers.
Ishani Wickremasinghe is a niece of former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe
