UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet has said that she is concerned about the deaths of suspects in police custody and the deaths of people in clashes between police and criminal gangs in Sri Lanka.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has called for an immediate and independent inquiry into such incidents.

She was addressing the 47th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

She added that she was also concerned about the harassment of minorities and appointments to the Office of the Missing Persons.

The High Commissioner for Human Rights said that steps would be taken to submit a progress report to the Human Rights Council next September.
