Wildlife and Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera states that discussions are underway to name another animal instead of the Giant squirrel (Ratufa macroura), which has been named the national animal.

The Minister said that the fact that the animal has been named the national animal has become a problem in reducing crop damage from the Giant squirrel which is an animal that damages crops greatly.

He also mentioned that a decision will be taken in the future as to whether it is possible to name another animal such as the leopard as the national animal.
