The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has decided to increase electricity tariffs in the face of rising fuel prices.
A special discussion is to be held today to decide on such price increase percentages.
It is proposed to increase the electricity tariff in view of the huge increase in fuel prices, increase in production cost, increase in loss per unit of electricity and non-increase of electricity tariff in nine years.
The CEB is currently losing Rs. 25,000 million a year and has no choice but to increase electricity tariffs.
Meanwhile, the Water Supply and Drainage Board states that if the electricity tariff is increased, the water tariff will have to be increased.
The board also said that water tariffs would have to be increased in line with the high cost of electricity used to pump water.
