Welikada verdict – Emil Ranjan sentenced to death

Former Prisons Commissioner Emil Ranjan Lamahewa has been sentenced to death by the Colombo High Court yesterday day (12).

 Neomal Rangajeewa, the then Inspector of the Police Narcotics Bureau, who was the first accused in the case, was acquitted by the court.

27 inmates were killed during a search operation conducted by the Police Special Task Force (STF) at Welikada Prison on November 09, 2012.

Meanwhile, a group of officers including the then Commanding Officer of the Police Special Task Force, the Deputy Inspector General of Police were also injured.
