Kopay Police say that the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court has obtained a restraining order prohibiting the celebration of ‘Mahavira Day’ at the Jaffna University during the Week.

The order was issued by Jaffna Magistrate Peter Paul after the Kopay Police reported to the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court on the preparations for the Jaffna University Heroes’ Day celebrations and the dangers of disturbing public order.

Accordingly, a group of activists including the President and Secretary of the Jaffna University Students ‘Union have been barred from celebrating Heroes’ Day and no student has been allowed to celebrate at the university in a manner that would disturb the public order, police said.

Jaffna University students have been seen secretly celebrating Maha Viru for the past few years during the Maha Viru Week from November 21 to 27.
