Great Barrier Reef is in danger – UNESCO

UNESCO had announced the Great Barrier Reef which is the world’s biggest coral reef system should be put on a list of World Heritage Sites that are “in danger” because of the harm caused by climate change.

Even the UN’s cultural body says the world’s biggest coral reef system should be put on the endangered list at a meeting next month Australian government is strongly opposing the recommendation.

The UNESCO had urged Australia to take “accelerated action” immediately on global warming.

The Unesco report says the Australian government, had failed to meet the key targets on improving water quality in the reef.

If the recommendation accepted, it’ll be the first time a natural World Heritage Site has been placed on the “in danger” list because of impacts from climate change in the history.
