Sri lankan government will continue to arrest Indian Fishermen; Douglas Devananda

Sri Lankan authorities would continue to arrest Indian fishermen poaching in Sri Lankan waters, Minister Douglas Devananda said.

He explained that if they cross the international marintime boundary line and poach sri lankan water government is compelled to arrest them as Sri Lanka’s maritime resources are being damaged by unlawful fishing activities.

Both the countries are addressing the problem for more than a decade now but poaching continues despite of all the efforts.

Some measured are proposed to address the issue;
Joint management of fisheries resources.
Encouraging Tamil Nadu fishermen to undertake deep sea fishing.
Regular dialogues between the representatives of the fisheries communities of both sides.
