Human Rights Watch requested on President Ranil Wickremesinghe immediately stop using illegal force against peaceful protesters. They further demand the immediate release of the arbitrarily detained protesters. The website further stated that a proper investigation should be conducted regarding this incident and legal action should be taken against those responsible. Human Rights Watch’s South Asia Director Meenakshi Ganguli further emphasizes that the brutal attack by security forces on peaceful protesters in Colombo city centre one day after the President took office was under the President’s supervision. She also points out that the dangerous message of the current government using force instead of law has been given to Sri Lankans through that action. Ms. Meenakshi Ganguli emphasizes that international partners will never support a country that violates the rights of the people.

Economic Crisis in Sri Lanka-All diesel and kerosene plants stopped due to fuel shortage

Kalanitissa Combined Power Plant has been shut down since Friday night due to a lack of fuel. Ceylon Electricity Board spokesperson Andrew Nawamani said that it is not possible to give a date for the re-operation of the Kelanitissa power plant. He said that naphtha or diesel should be provided to generate electricity again in those power plants and added that 1 million litres of diesel are required to power the plant. Several other diesel plants have also been closed due to fuel shortages. At present, other thermal power plants are not operational except the Norochchole coal power plant belonging to the Ceylon Electricity Board.  At present, about 40% of the electricity demand in this country is supplied by hydropower and thirty 4% by the coal-fired power plant and the other required amount is supplied by fuel combustion and renewable power plants.

The security department is investigating whether explosives were planted in the Presidential Palace and the Presidential Secretariat. Accordingly, the bomb disposal unit has already been deployed to those two places to check on it. Responding to that, President Ranil Wickramasinghe pointed out that this was the same way when the security forces of the country acted by American law to free the US Capitol building from a group of protesters. The President has also said that the Presidential Secretariat is the main administrative building in the country and many important documents are kept in the Presidential Secretariat. President Ranil Wickramasinghe has also stated that although the protestors were given prior notices to leave the Presidential Secretariat on the 14th, 16th and 21st, the protesters refused to leave the premises at a time until 2 pm. But the President has also said that in a background where it is not possible to give time continuously, the police and security forces were used to evacuate the protesters from the place by the law of the country. The President also told the ambassador that he was surprised that no party protested against the burning of his private house when he was the Acting President. The Canadian High Commissioner has said that the Sri Lanka Bar Association has also stated how the protesters were removed from the Presidential Secretariat.  The President has said that it is not the overall opinion of the Bar Association as he and the Minister of Foreign Affairs participating in the discussion is also a member of the Sri Lanka Bar Association But it is reported that the President also said that it may be the opinion of the current President of the Sri Lanka Bar Association Mr. Saliya Peiris.  President Ranil Wickramasinghe has emphasized that he is also a member of the process of drafting the 1978 Constitution and always works by the Constitution of the country.

Asia cup 2022 hosting removed from Sri Lanka due to economic and political crisis

According to the report, it has been decided to remove the hosting of the Asia Cup cricket tournament which was to be held in Sri Lanka next August from Sri Lanka and give it to the United Arab Emirates. This is due to the current economic and political instability in Sri Lanka. When  officials asked whether the tournament can be held in Sri Lanka under these conditions, the Sri Lanka Cricket Board informed that there are problems related to providing all the facilities. After a discussion held on Thursday, it has been decided to hold the tournament in Dubai instead of Sri Lanka.  The Chairman of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Sourav Ganguly, has confirmed it and told them to prepare for the match in Dubai between August 27-September 11…  If there was no economic and political crisis in the country, Sri Lanka Cricket would have been able to earn a large dollar income by hosting this event.
