Sri Lankans in Italy are preparing to hold a protest in Bologna today. Organizers say the peaceful protest is aimed at finding the masterminds of the Easter attack and revealing the truth. The Italian government has already given permission for the protest. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa is also currently in Italy and is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the inaugural session of the G20 Interfaith Conference in Bologna today.

Rajiv Gunaratne, head of GENXT, Apple’s official distributor in Sri Lanka, says it will not be possible to buy low – cost mobile phones in the future. He says that due to the new restrictions, there will be a huge shortage of mobile phones in the market and through that the prices will go up significantly. He also said that only a few large scale entrepreneurs would be left and small scale entrepreneurs would collapse. He made these comments in an interview on a youtube channel.

There could be an oil shortage in the country in the future- The Commercial Services Industry and Progressive Services Association

The Commercial Services Industry and Progressive Services Association says there could be an oil shortage in the country in the future. Its chairman Bandula Saman Kumara said the situation was due to the decision taken to suspend fuel distribution on Saturday and Sunday. He said essential service providers, including the port, have the capacity to store fuel and therefore should distribute oil on Saturdays and Sundays. However, the Chairman of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation states that there is no possibility of an oil shortage in the country due to the strike launched by the employees of the Sapugaskanda Refinery. Workers are intensifying their strike on Saturday and Sunday to protest the suspension of oil supplies.

The government has decided to give the Pfaizer vaccine to the Hambantota district and the relevant vaccine was sent to the Hambantota district as per the instructions received, said the Director of Health Services, Dr. Asela Gunawardena. He added that the decision on the distribution of vaccines would be made by the Corona Eradication Task Force headed by the President. He also said that no country that administers vaccines would recommend the areas where they should be given.

Sri Lankan Famers use the harvest for composting

Some of the farmers who grow vegetables in Nuwara Eliya say that the harvest will be cut off and used for composting as the vegetable production was not successful this season. The farmers said that they had grown leeks, cabbage, carrots and lettuce during this season and that there was no market price for the vegetables as they did not use chemical fertilizers and pesticides and the color and yield of their produce had decreased. The farmers say that the Nuwara Eliya Agrarian Services Center does not provide chemical fertilizers to the farmers who grow vegetables on a small scale and their cultivation cannot be accustomed to using organic fertilizer all at once. Due to the prevailing situation, the future of Nuwara Eliya vegetable growers is at high risk due to the lack of high demand for vegetables grown in Nuwara Eliya.
There is no point in maintaining the travel restrictions – Dr. Chandima Jeewandara

Dr. Chandima Jeewandara of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura states that there is no point in maintaining further travel restrictions between provinces. He points out that the delta strain of the corona virus is spreading across the country and therefore there is no point in closing Colombo alone. He said that more than 95% of the corona infected samples tested islandwide were identified as having the Delta strain, adding that the Delta strain is currently the leading strain in the country.
State Minister of Finance Ajith Nivard Cabraal has decided to resign from his post

State Minister of Finance Ajith Nivard Cabraal has decided to resign from his post as a Member of Parliament. Accordingly, his resignation letter is due to be sent to the Secretary General of Parliament next Monday. Thereafter he is to be appointed as the new Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. It is reported that he will be appointed as the Governor of the Central Bank with the powers of a Cabinet Minister. Mr. Cabraal has previously served as the Governor of the Central Bank for more than eight years.
