 South Korea and the US have responded after North Korea fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan. International media reported that South Korean and US forces conducted missile drills in response. Also, it was reported that the UN Security Council is going to meet and discuss the missile test conducted by North Korea.

The player who misses the flight loses the World Cup

One of the strongest batsmen in the West Indies team has lost the T20 World Cup this year. Shimron Hetmyer has lost the World Cup cricket tournament.  Although he was scheduled to fly to Australia yesterday, he lost the tournament due to the notification that he will not be able to arrive at the airport on time. The west indies authorities say that Shamarh Brooks has been named for the vacancy due to him. The West Indies cricket authorities further say that Shimron Hetmyer was scheduled to go to Australia on the 1st. However, he refused the trip due to personal reasons.  Foreign sports media have reported quoting cricket authorities that they were informed that they can go to Australia on the 3rd Monday. However, after Shimron Hetmyer notified that he would not be able to arrive at the airport on time on Monday, the authorities further stated that he was removed from the squad.

A group of students were admitted hospital due to food poisoning

 17 grade five students from a school in Buttala, Palwatta area have been admitted to Wellawaya Base Hospital due to food poisoning. According to the reports, children fell ill after eating the food provided by the school this morning (05). Later, they were rushed to the hospital, and all the students admitted in this way are currently recuperating in the Wellawaya Hospital.

Gas prices decreased

 Litro Company has worked to reduce domestic gas prices from midnight today (05).  Accordingly, the price of a 12.5 kg gas cylinder has been reduced by Rs 271 and its new price is Rs 4,280.  A 5 kg gas cylinder has been reduced by Rs 107 and its new price is Rs 1,720.  A 2.3 kg cylinder has been reduced by Rs 48 and its new price is Rs 800.

There is not enough papers to print text books

The Ceylon Teachers Association states that the Ministry of Education is ready not to print the 33 lakh textbooks required for school students for the year 2023. Its Chief Secretary Mr Joseph Stalin mentions that it has been decided to take this step due to the expenditure of 1600 crore rupees on the printing of textbooks and the shortage of paper.  Accordingly, the authorities are working to collect the old textbooks and give them to the children, he said.

After defeating Sri Lanka Legends, Indian Legends won the Road Safety Championship for the second time

 The Indian Legends team won the Road Safety Cricket World Championship for the second time. That was by winning the match held in Raipur against the Sri Lanka Legends team by 33 runs. Batting first in the match, the Indian Legends team managed to collect 195 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. The Sri Lanka Legends team, who played the reply innings, managed to score only 162 runs after 18 overs and 5 balls.

A rapid increase in breast cancer cases in the past two decades

12 cases of breast cancer are reported in the country, everyday says the National Cancer Control Program. Its specialist, Mrs. Hazareli Fernando, stated that the past two decades have shown a rapid increase in the number of breast cancer patients in Sri Lanka. Breast Cancer Awareness Month started yesterday (01). Based on that, steps will be taken to raise awareness about breast cancer at the local level and to refer diagnosed patients for treatment.

There is no reduction in bus fares – Bus Associations: Even though petrol prices are low, there is no reduction in food prices – Restaurant Owners Association

 The bus associations say that there will be no reduction in bus fares at this time as there has been no reduction in diesel prices. The President of All Ceylon Private Bus Association Federation, Mr. Anjana Priyanjith also mentioned that there will be no reduction in bus fares in the background of diesel prices not being low. Meanwhile, the three-wheeler trade unions say that even though the price of petrol has been lowered, there is no reduction in the three-wheeler fares. The President of the All Ceylon Tricycle Drivers’ Union, Mr. Lalith Dharmasekara stated that the government does not provide enough petrol for passenger transport. Meanwhile, although the price of petrol has decreased, the prices of food in restaurants have not decreased, says the Association of Restaurant Owners. Its chairman Mr. Asela Sampath mentioned that the prices of food and beverages including milk tea can be reduced only if the prices of other services in the market are reduced.  The Ceylon Petroleum Statutory Corporation has taken steps to reduce the price of a liter of Octane 92 petrol by 40 rupees with effect from yesterday (01) midnight.

An investigation by the Human Rights Commission to find out the reasons for the economic crisis in Sri Lanka

 The Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission has planned to start an investigation to find out the causes of the economic crisis in the country.  The commission stated that due to various political reasons, it will pay close attention to the impact on the country’s economy through the occasional change in national policies. In this investigation, the responsible authorities have acted irresponsibly in making decisions in principle, ignoring the national interest in the separation of ministries and scopes, and the impact on the country’s economy. The commission also stated that it is expected to receive statements from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, the Ministry of Finance, the ministries related to the implementation of national policies, which are directly related to the economy of the country, and who are currently working and who have worked before. For that, the support of several economic experts will also be obtained. The Human Rights Commission stated that this investigation is being conducted based on the violation of the people’s rights to live through the collapse of the economy. The UN Human Rights Commissioner’s report to the recently held Geneva Human Rights Council session also clarified the facts regarding the economic crimes that occurred in Sri Lanka. In that report, she pointed out that in order to get a permanent solution to the economic crisis that has affected the human rights of all communities, attention must be paid to the corruption that is rooted in this country.  She also emphasized the need to take action regarding past and recent human rights violations and economic crimes in Sri Lanka.

Popular actor Darshan Dharmaraj bids farewell

 Veteran actor Darshan Dharmaraj has passed away. A spokesperson of the Colombo National Hospital stated that Mr. Darshan Dharmaraj passed away this morning (02) due to a heart attack.  He was 41 years old when he died. Born in Rakwana, he entered the art scene with the tele drama “A-9” directed by Sidney Chandrasekaran. Darshan Dharmaraj made his film debut in 2008 with the movie ‘Prabhakaran’. Since then, he became a talented star of Hela cinema and contributed to many Sinhala and Tamil films including Machang, Iniwan, Mata, Tsunami, Komali Kings. Constantly praised by critics as an actor full of realistic acting skills, he is an extremely popular artist among the Tamil as well as the Sinhalese fan community.
