Online retail company sues for illegally selling NMRA unapproved hand sanitisers

According to the Extraordinary Gazette Notification No. 2216/33 issued on 25th February 2021, manufacturers of hand sanitisers should register with the National Drug Regulatory Authority (NMRA) and mention that registration number on the sanitiser package.

In contrast, the manufacture, import, distribution, sale and display of sanitisers are prohibited in Sri Lanka.

However, one of the leading online retailers in Sri Lanka has sold NMRA-unapproved sanitisers..

The Puttalam Consumer Affairs Authority has raided the company and is taking legal action against the company and a case is to be filed in the Chilaw Magistrate’s Court.

The Puttalam Consumer Affairs Authority further stated that raids carried out throughout the district regarding sanitizers that are against such standards.
