Sri Lankan Rupee reached Rs. 200 limit against US dollar

The daily exchange report of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) Sri Lankan Rupee has further depreciated against the US Dollar. In third time in the country’s history Sri Lankan rupees selling rate exceeded Rs 200 Today(March 16) The current buying rate of the US Dollar stands at Rs. 195.28 and selling rate of the US dollar stands at Rs. 200.06. The selling rate of the US dollar stood at Rs.200.47 on April 09, 2020 and this is the highest selling rate recorded for a US dollar since then.

A train hits bus in Talaimannar; One person dead, several injured

A train hit a private bus at the railway crossing in Talaimannar at around 2.30 p.m. today ( March 16). The train was traveling from Colombo Fort to Talaimannar. One person was dead and nearly 20 others were left wounded and hospitalized. The wounded passengers were admitted to the Mannar Hospital. It is reported that two of them were in critical condition. The driver of the bus has been taken into police custody and Mannar Police is conducting further investigations.

CID arrested Azath Salley

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested the Former Governor of Western Province Azath Salley today evening. (March 16).Coordinating officer of the Attorney General Nishara Jayaratne states that the arrest was made on the advice of the Attorney General. Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana said that provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism (PTA) is keep Salley under detained and interrogated. This is because of a controversial statements Azath Salley made with regard of the law of the country as the Leader of the National Unity Front (NUF). He had stated that he will only respect the Quran, the Hadiths and Shariah but not the laws of the government.

Suspect was arrested for pretending as a policeman

A 36 years old man arrested in pannipitiyata area yesterday (March 15) by officers from the Western Province South Crimes Division. The suspect was impersonated a police sub inspecter since long period of time. It is reported that suspect had had a fake ID card as a police sub inspector. Also he had engaged in various type of crimes using this new fake identity as a policemen. He even had posted pictures on social media posing as a policeman wearing police uniforms. He was identified as a resident from Rakwana and going to appear before the Maharagama magistrate’s court today.

Paddy Marketing Board decided to convert Paddy stocks in to rice

Stocks of paddy purchased from the farmers by the Paddy Marketing Board decided to convert in to rice immediately by the Cabinet of Ministers. The Department of Government Information stated that the rice stocks will be distributed continuously through the network of Sathosa. There is a lack of adequate stoks of rice currently in the market. This decision has been taken as an alternative to take the pice under the controll.

All charges recorded against Sajin de Vaas over Mihin Lanka removed

The Bribery Commission of Sri Lanka educated the Colombo High Court today that all charges recorded against previous MP Sajin de Vass Gunawardena in association with the Mihin Lanka defilement case has been removed. Previous MP Sajin de Vaas Gunawardane revealed that the Bribery Commission educated this to the court when an argument documented by him against the Commission was taken ready for hearing today. “At the crossroads when complaints were to be documented, the Bribery Commission pulled out all charges,” Sajin de Vaas Gunawardane said. He said they pulled out all charges today as this was a completely manufactured case by then Director General Dilrukshi Wickramasinghe.

A special investigation is conducting on Azath salleys controversial statement

Police media spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana states that a team of criminal investigation department have been appointed to inquire about the controversial statement made by Azath Salley. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) will lead the five members from the CID. The investigations are currently under way. Azath Salley the leader of national unity front ( NUF) recently made a controversial satement about the law of the country. He also complained about the activities of Criminal Investigation Department. Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekara, Minister of Public Security said that CID had instructed to do further investigations on the case.

Sri lankan Student had died in Japan

Sri lankan women has in a immigration detention center in Nagoya Japan. She was dead while she was being detained because of her visa has expired. According to the statement from the Sri lankan Embassy in Tokyo , the deceased women ( 33) and her death was reported in March 6. She had arrived Japan in the year 2017 as a student and it was revealed as she was a resident from Gampaha. She had been at detention centre since August 2020. Minister Roshan Gamage led a team to visit the detention centre in Nayoga and they had met the authorities. They had discussed about the death and the authorities had promised to conduct an impartial inquiry about the case. Also they vowed to send the repot as soon as possible. The women had complained the authorities in the detention center few times about the food she received while she was satayed there. She had also complained that that food made her weak. Reason for the death was yet not founded authorities had reported that she had examined by a doctor at least six times and had hospitalised at least two times. The embassy spokesman states that her family had informed about her death and the dispatch of the remains will be taken accordingly

A suspect arrested over drug offences revealed as related to Islamic extremism

Peliyagoda police had arrested a resident from Panadura Keselwatta area a few months before. He was later identified to have links with extremismists organization. Investigations revealed that large amount of money has sent to his bank accounts from Dubai. Police Media Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohan states that some of the money had transferred to a organisation that promotes Islamic extremism. The suspects had later had later handed over to Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) for further investigations.

A new system to vaccinate senior citizens in Colombo district has been introduced by Colombo Municipal Council. It is a new system made to pre- book a convenient date and a time. This is only for residents from Colombo 1- 15 above age 60.
