The Archbishop says no to the requested discussion by Prof. GL Peiris

Prime Minister Malcolm Ranjith has conveyed to the Prime Minister, Colombo, that he must have faith in the transparency of the investigation into the Easter attack if he is to accept the invitation of the Minister of External Affairs, Prof. GL Peiris, to come to a discussion on the steps taken by the Government in connection with the investigations into the Easter Sunday terrorist attack.  Catholic Church media spokesman Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando said that The Cardinal has made it clear in a letter to the Minister that They are open to such discussions but certain conditions must be met and will not come into the discussion until those conditions are met. Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando said that the Cardinal has informed the Minister in his letter the importance of credible investigations into the Easter attack, in order to build that confidence, the implementation of the recommendations made in the report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the Easter Attack must begin. Father Cyril Gamini said this in a special statement to the media.

Ranjan Request Presidential Pardon

The Samagi Jana Balawega has decided to demand the release of the former parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake, who is serving a four-year sentence with hard labour. The decision was taken at a meeting of the party’s parliamentary group. Accordingly, Samagi Jana Balawegaya Leader and Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa has stated that the request will be made by President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. Also, MP Vedarachchi has decided to entrust him with the task of looking into the situation of prison inmates who are restricted from visiting the prison due to the corona situation.  Accordingly, the Leader of the Opposition has sent a letter to President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa requesting the relevant actions.

Former Secretary General of the United National Party Palitha Range Bandara says that , government will have to hand over the country back to Ranil Wikramasinghe by the year 2023. He said that the present government is now more fed up with the Pohottu people and added that 69 lakhs of people are now praising Ranil more than the UNP. He said the UNP had no interest in fighting with the Samagi Jana Balawewa and that there was no future for anyone who broke away from the party. He made these comments while addressing a group of UNP activists on the internet

Sri Lankan President shows executive power, seizes 29,000 tons of sugar

The Commissioner General of Essential Services, Major General NDSP, said that 29,900 metric tons of sugar found hidden in warehouses were taken over by the government after an investigation and operation yesterday (01).  The consignment of sugar is planned to be sold to the public by state and private traders at a controlled price.‍ The import duty of Rs. 50 per kilo of sugar has been reduced to 25 cents from October 14, 2020, to provide relief to consumers. The amount of sugar in the country at that time was 88,878 metric tons. According to the Consumer Affairs Authority, 5,84,000 metric tons of sugar was imported between October 14, 2020, and June 30, 2021. The monthly demand for sugar in the country is around 35,000 metric tons. However, data from the Consumer Affairs Authority reveals that sugar imports have exceeded the annual sugar requirement. An attempt has been made in the recent past to create an artificial shortage of sugar in the country and to sell sugar at a very high price, causing great inconvenience to the consumer. Because of the issue, emergency regulations regarding the provision of essential food has been announced by President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa with effect from midnight 2021-08-30 in accordance vested in it by Section 2 of the Public Security Ordinance, Enforcing the provisions of Part IIi of that Ordinance, Prepared in accordance with the provisions of Article 5. Accordingly, the President appointed a Commissioner General of Essential Services and authorized him to coordinate the distribution of paddy, rice, sugar and other consumer goods required for the normal functioning of the people. The Commissioner General of Essential Services states that the government has taken steps to seize the hidden sugar stocks and release them to the market at a controlled price in order to protect the consumers.

Dr. Lakshman Edirisinghe, President of the Government Medical Practitioners’ Association, says that the authorities should reconsider when making decisions at a time like this when Delta variety is sweeping across Sri Lanka and a higher number of covid patients reported daily as well as the number of deaths is on the rise. “The capacity of some hospitals has reached a maximum due to covid patients. The entire health staff, including doctors, is being embarrassed. ” He emphasizes that the economy should be taken care of but every decision should be made on a scientific basis. He made this statement while appearing on a television program. The journalist questioned the views of the Government Medical Professionals Association on the government’s move to bring in tourists from Israel in the wake of the failed attempt to bring in Ukrainian tourists by 2020. Mr. Edirisinghe said that at a time when Sri Lanka is also at its maximum health capacity, it should be done on a scientific basis in decision making at a time when the health system is in crisis even in countries that attract such tourists. When attracting tourists under a biobubble, the country’s system must be prepared for that. Dr. Edirisinghe also stressed that there is a risk of a crisis situation by making decisions based on one-sided factors. “Biobubble can be considered an accepted method under special circumstances. He says that closing the country and restricting travel are two things and closing the country is important but if it does not restrict travel then there is no point in making that lockdown. He also points out that travel should be limited to at least 90% through a lockdown. 

US dollar selling price go beyond the 260 rupee limit in Sri Lanka

Today, the selling price of a US dollar has exceeded 226 rupees at a number of leading commercial banks in the country. However, it is alleged that it is very difficult to open letters of credit for the same. But the selling prices of state banks are shown as 204 rupees. The dollar exchange rate is 204 rupees per dollar. But Pettah exchanges are selling the US dollar beyond the 260 rupee limit.

An elderly mother is brought to the weekly market and abandoned

The Nuwara Eliya Police have commenced an investigation in searching caretakers of a 75-year-old mother who was abandoned after being taken to a weekly market adjacent to the Nuwaraeliya police station on the 31st. Residents around the “Sathi Pola” area say that the mother was taken to the Sathi Pola grounds on the afternoon of the 30th and abandoned. The mother, who did not say anything about her caretakers, told police that she was in the Magastota area in Nuwara Eliya and another time was residing in Labukele, Nuwara Eliya.
