Kelani River is the most polluted river in the country

The Kelani River has been identified as the most polluted river in the country. Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera says that 1,344 places where the Kelani River is polluted have been identified so far.  Commenting on this, the Minister said, “From this, we hope to find out where the pollution from the Kelani River comes from and how it will be solved. We hope that the Surakimu Ganga Project will turn all 103 rivers in the country into clean rivers.We also work to bring water to usable levels in all of our 103 rivers. Among them10,743 places have been identified as contaminants or pollutants. The Kelani River in particular has the most polluted water. 1,344 places in the Kelani rivers have been identified as waste collection points. The toilets in the houses are direct across the river. We need to take action to rectify this. “

Veteran film director Sunil Soma Peiris passes away

Veteran Sri Lankan film director Sunil Soma Peiris has passed away. He was 72 years old at the time of his death. He is also known as the “King of Box Office” in Sinhala cinema. Welikada prisoner case verdict in January

The three-judge bench of the Colombo High Court announced that the verdict in the case filed against former Police Narcotics Bureau Inspector Neomal Rangajeewa and former Prison Superintendent Emil Ranjan Lamahewa, who were accused of killing a group of prisoners while trying to quell the clashes at Welikada Prison in 2012, will be announced on January 6. The case was heard for more than three years by a three-judge bench comprising Gihan Kulatunga, Pradeep Hettiarachchi and Manjula Tilakaratne. The court pronounced the decision after concluding the submissions made by the defendant and the plaintiff in the case. The bench said that due to the complexity of the evidence presented at the trial, it would take time to study the matter extensively and pronounce its verdict. On November 9, 2012, STF personnel entered the Welikada Prison and launched an operation to seize illegal and prohibited items in the possession of the inmates. The Attorney General has filed a case against the two accused alleging that eight prisoners were killed in the clashes.

Gold medal for Sri Lanka from Srimali

Srimali Samarakoon, who represented Sri Lanka at the 2021 Commonwealth Games, won a gold medal for Sri Lanka. That was from the 45kg weightlifting competition. The tournament will be held in Uzbekistan.

Two girls who escaped from the Wattegama orphanage in Kandy have been found

Three of the five girls who escaped from a rehabilitation orphanage in the Wattegama – Meegammana area in Kandy have been found. It was a government orphanage and the wardens had secretly run away with the girls on the 7th. The five children had fled the scene while returning to a school near the orphanage. The girls were said to be between the ages of 16 and 18. They had informed the police that they did not want to stay in the orphanage and therefore fled They later surrendered to the police and was transferred to another orphanage. The other two children are also suspected to have gone to their homes or relatives’ homes and have not yet been found.

Three people in the same family jump to the train and suicide to avoid debt cases

 Watawala Police said that a father, mother and son of the same family were killed when they were hit by a data make train travelling from Badulla to Colombo yesterday. The three were aged 70, 65 and 40. The three had collided with a train near the 103 mileposts between Rosella and Watawala railway stations at around 11.45 am yesterday (08). The victims have been identified as residents of the Samimale area in Maskeliya. An employee of the Rosella Railway Station said that the three had walked towards the Watawala Railway Station from the Rosella Railway Station after inquiring about the running hours of the train. It has been revealed that the three victims had jumped on the train with the intention of suiciding. One of the victims was identified as Shantha Kumar Raj, 40, a resident of the Maskeliya Samimale area who had been engaged in the spice trade. There have been several police complaints against him regarding money laundering Meanwhile, he was stuck in a troubled economy because had married four times, get divorced from time to time and had to pay maintenance. It was said that these people were stuck in cases and could have been jailed shortly. In the meantime, he had moved out of the house with his father and mother to escape debtors and had been living in another rented house for some time. It is believed that he may have committed suicide where there was no escape.  The bodies of the three victims were taken to the Nawalapitiya Railway Station by the same train and handed over to the security forces.

A bid of Rs. 5000 million cannot be given to the 510 kg gemstone

  A bid of US $ 250 million has been submitted for a 510 kg Blue gen cluster found in Ratnapura. Minister of State Lohan Ratwatte stated that the bid was received at a public gem auction in England. However, the owners of the gemstone and the Gem and Jewelery Authority have not agreed to the price, he said.  The Minister further stated that the price offered by Sri Lanka for this purpose is US $ 400 million. County will be lockdown again?

A special meeting will be held today on the future course of action in the face of the spread of the corona virus. The meeting will be chaired by Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella.  He also said that there would be discussions on controlling the corona situation without closing the country. Legislation is already underway to make it mandatory to obtain both corona controls, the minister said. Meanwhile, the health sector points out that the government should take immediate action as the spread of corona at ground level has accelerated.
