Food inflation in Sri Lanka has risen ahead of Somalia

Food inflation in Sri Lanka has risen to 17.5%, according to the tradingeconomics website. It is ranked 16th in the world and 6th in the Asian region. Sri Lanka tops the list, even ahead of Afghanistan, Somalia, Haiti and Nigeria. This calculation is based on last month’s inflation of 9.9% and this time without updating to the Central Bank’s inflation rate of 11.1%.

A train collided with a bus

Two individuals arrested for stealing cheques

Police have arrested two suspects for stealing cheques and depositing them in a bank. The arrested persons are aged 32 and 38.  Investigations have revealed that the suspects are residents of Athurugiriya and Homagama areas. It is reported that they broke into the seat of a scooter type motorcycle and stole the cheques. The suspects had stolen cheques worth Rs. 470,000 and deposited them in the bank. Police also seized Rs. 403,000 from the money they had obtained at the time of their arrest.  The suspects were arrested following a complaint lodged with the Athurugiriya Police and are due to be produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court today.

An explosion in a court in India

Two people have been killed in a bomb blast near a court in the Indian state of Punjab.  According to media reports, the blast took place inside a court complex in Ludhiana.  Four others were seriously injured in the blast.

A covid pill from Pfizer

Pfizer’s covid tablet has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It is the first approved oral medication for covid virus infections and the only home remedy.  Preliminary studies, meanwhile, have shown that omicron is less likely to be hospitalized than other covid variants, but reports suggest that its prevalence should be considered. The number of daily infections in the UK with the rapid Omicron distribution has crossed the 100 mark for the first time yesterday (22). Husband arrested for wife’s murder after 14 years

 Police have arrested a man who brutally beat his wife to death with a stick.  The murder took place in 2007 and 14 years later the suspect’s husband was arrested.  It is reported that the suspect has been arrested during an investigation carried out by the Organized Crime Investigation Division. In 2007, it was revealed that the suspect had been working at the Talawakele Post Office and was residing at Watagoda Estate in Talawakele at that time. He was 49 years old when his wife died after being assaulted by the suspect. Subsequently, the Nuwara Eliya Magistrate’s Court issued an order in 2009 directing the Colombo Organized Crime Investigation Division to launch a special investigation into the incident. Police investigations have revealed that the 74 year old suspect has been staying in the Embilipitiya Tunkama area for 14 years. The suspect was arrested by the police yesterday (22) and is due to be produced before the Nuwara Eliya Magistrate’s Court today.

A warning from the PHI Association that omicron may have been socialized

The Association of Public Health Inspectors warns that there may be more people in the community than officially reported omicron infections.
