Tax reduced on Imported potatoes and big onion

The Special Commodity Levy on imported potatoes and big onions has been reduced with effect from midnight yesterday (31). The excise duty on imported potatoes and big onions has been reduced by 30 rupees per kilogram, the Finance Ministry said.  With the approval of the Minister of Finance on the instructions of the President, these measures have been taken to provide relief to the people by reducing the current prices in the market.

The first country in the world to see the dawn of 2022

 Kiribati Island became the first country in the world to celebrate the dawn of the new year 2022. Kiribati consists of 32 islands and a small coral island. Next, New Zealand will have a 2022 New Year. It is situated in the western part of the Pacific Ocean. The candidate for the presidency in 1994 promised  citizens of Kiribati that if he wins the elections, he will ensure that the citizens of Kiribati will celebrate the New Year first. After the elections, he kept his promise and the country is divided into three time zones and the easternmost part of the country celebrates first in the world.

Teens could vote immediately upon completion of 18 years in Sri Lanka

 Legal provisions have been made for persons who have attained the age of 18 years to be given the right to vote by a supplementary electoral roll before entering the main electoral roll. The Election Commission has stated this in a statement. Accordingly, as the first stage of this, citizens who have completed 18 years of age during the period from 01.06.2021 to 31.01.2022 i.e. those who were born between 01.06.2003 and 31.01.2004 can apply for registration in the Electoral Roll by entering it in the YC form. 

15 billion rupees worth of drugs seized

The Navy has seized more than 15 billion rupees worth of narcotics during operations in 2021. The Navy said that the drugs were seized during raids conducted in Sri Lankan waters as well as in international waters along with other intelligence units. During the operation, 141 suspects, including foreigners, were arrested with more than 1,268 kilograms of heroin. Also, stocks of various types of narcotics including 7,095 kilograms of Kerala cannabis, 158 kilograms of ice and 88 kilograms of hashish were seized. The Navy announced that 327 suspects were arrested during operations conducted in the year 2021.

Cement prices increased again

Local cement companies have decided to increase the price of cement from today (01).  Accordingly, a 50 kg bag of cement will be increased by Rs. 100, the companies said.  The new price of a bag of cement is 1375 rupees.

News reports saying Milk powder shop in Mirihana has been sealed by the police are false

According to the Police Media Division, reports that a milk powder shop in Mirihana has been sealed by the police are false. The division said in a statement that the President had instructed the public to look into the reasons for the long queues to buy products from Pelawatta’s milk powder outlet.  Accordingly, the police have been instructed to look into the matter and avoid the queue situation, the statement said.

Members of private security agencies are an integral part of the country Secretary

General of Defense Kamal Gunaratne says that the private security service makes a tremendous contribution to national security.  The Secretary said that with the expansion of security needs to a wider range in the recent past, private security companies will be making greater contributions to ensure the national security of the country. This was stated by General Kamal Gunaratne addressing the Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Defense Providers Association in Colombo. Defense Secretary General Kamal Gunaratne said that nearly 150,000 members of private security forces have become an integral part of the country as partners in ensuring Sri Lanka’s national security.

A label for local liquor

The Excise Department is introducing a safety label on locally produced liquor, said Excise Commissioner Kapila Kumarasinghe. A spokesman for the Excise Department said that the decision was taken to increase the taxes due to the state treasury. He said that the stock of unnumbered liquor in the market is due to expire before it reaches the market with such security stickers and a period of three months will be given for that.  He says that by the first day of April 2022, this safety sticker is expected on all liquor stocks sold in the entire market island wide. This safety labeling has been implemented on imported liquor for about a year now.

The Coconut Research Institute (CRO) says it has received complaints that counterfeit seedlings are being released at exorbitant prices under the name of certified coconut seedlings. The agency also points out that the racket is being carried out by various individuals using fake labels. Certification of coconut seedlings recommended by the Coconut Research Institute is done only by the Coconut Research Institute and the Coconut Cultivation Board  The company further informed the public that the plants will be certified with the following color labels.

Quinton de Kock bids farewell to Test cricket

 One of the strongest players in the South African team has abruptly decided to retire from Test cricket. Wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kok said he was deciding for the good of his family. De Kok, 29, has announced his decision to the South African Cricket Board shortly after the Test defeat against India. His wife, Sasha, is expecting their first child. “My family is everything to me. I want the opportunity to spend more time with them. We are on the verge of a new and unique chapter in our lives.” He made his Test debut in 2014 and has so far scored 3,300 runs in 54 Tests at an average of 38.82. It includes 6 centuries and 22 half-centuries
