Rice exports to Sri Lanka is very advantageous They Pay extra $ 100 per ton,Does not even look at quality .- Myanmar

Myanmar says Sri Lanka imports rice at a higher price than other countries in the world and there are no restrictions on rice imports.  The secretary of the country’s rice warehouse told a leading news website that Myanmar exports rice to other countries at US $ 340-350 per tonne, but exports to Sri Lanka at a higher price of US $ 440-450 per tonne. He also said that Sri Lanka’s rice exports restrictions were relatively low compared to other countries and the quality was not restricted.

Russian President Announces Military Operation in the Donbass Region of Ukraine

 Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a “military operation” in Ukraine’s Donbass region, foreign media reported.  The Russian president announced in a televised address that the operation was a response to the West Bank and Ukraine’s response. The Russian president also warned that the West and Ukraine would continue to suffer repercussions if such reactions continued.

The T 20 match between Sri Lanka and India starts today

The 20 overs cricket tournament between Sri Lanka and India starts today (24). Its first match is scheduled to start today at 7.00 pm local time in Lucknow. Sri Lanka and India have played 22 T20I matches so far and India have won 14 of them.  Sri Lanka has won only 7 matches.

Senior journalist Sunil Madhava Premathilaka passed away

Senior journalist Sunil Madhava Premathilaka passed away last night. He was 78 years old at the time of his death. Sunil Madhava Premathilaka, a journalist as well as a book author, is one of the pioneers of journalism in the country. By writing a diary of a truth-teller’s , he left an indelible mark on the minds of Sri Lankan readers. He has translated several books, including Crying Freedom, America America, Carolina’s Diary, and Mohamed Ali. Mr. Sunil Madhava Premathilaka was also recently awarded the State Art Award. He is the son of Meemana Premathilaka, a great poet of the Colombo era.

Enjoining order against “Jaya Sri” band members lifted

The Colombo Commercial High Court lifted the enjoining order imposed on two members of the ‘Jaya Sri’ band for singing, promoting and selling 20 popular songs on the album ‘Mod Goviya’ and ‘Sundariye’. Colombo Commercial High Court Judge Apriyantha Fernando lifted the enjoining order and set May 27 as the date for the hearing. The censorship was issued to musicians Rohan Jayalath and Rohitha Jayalath after considering a complaint filed under the Intellectual Property Act by Jaya Sri, the band’s music director, composer and singer. The two respondents in the complaint have requested the court to remove the enjoining order as it is against the law. The two respondents, who have already left the band, had filed the complaint alleging that they were singing songs on the albums ‘Mod Goviya’ and ‘Sundariye’ composed by the band without their consent and that it was against the Intellectual Property Act.

The Murderer of the journalist Melissa Gunasekera was sentenced to death

The Court of Appeal has upheld the death sentence imposed by the Colombo High Court on a painter convicted of the murder of journalist Melissa Gunasekera. The order was passed by a bench of Justices Sampath Abeykoon and P. Kumaran Ratnam. Arulananda Anthony Ramson George, a painter, was indicted by the Attorney General in the Colombo H, high Court on February 2, 2014 on charges of trespassing, robbing and stabbing to death at her residence in Subhuthipura, Battaramulla. Defendant later appealed to the Court of Appeal, seeking his acquittal and release. The Court of Appeal ordered the dismissal of the appeal of the accused, ruling that the Colombo High Court Judge had followed due process in pronouncing the sentence.

A person arrested for selling women with underaged girls for Rs. 40 million

A person arrested in connection with an incident where a group of underage girls and women in Mt. Lavinia have earned more than Rs. 40 million by selling them for sex. The broker in the case, who was arrested by the CID, Colombo Chief Magistrate Buddhika C. Wijewardena has ordered that the suspect be remanded until the 4th of this month. Mr. Ragala made the order yesterday (22). Vithanage Rajeev Ravinath Jayasinghe, a resident of 108/35, Dream Range, Pirivena Road, Wadduwa was remanded. The case was filed in court by the Illegal Assets Investigation Division of the CID.

Putin names two pro-Russian provinces of Ukraine as independent states

Addressing the nation, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the pro-Russian provinces, which belong to Ukraine and reject Ukrainian rule, are recognized as independent states. The pro-Russian separatist provinces of Ukraine are the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which borders Russia. This is the first time that Russia has officially recognized these provinces as independent states. Donetsk and Luhansk have been supporting Russia since 2014, rejecting Ukrainian rule. In 2014, Russia similarly invaded the Ukrainian Crimean peninsula, which had refused to rule Ukraine. 

Former Mrs Sri Lanka Pushpika de Silva has been summoned to the police reguarding the attack on the house of journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrema

Former Mrs Sri Lanka  Pushpika de Silva has been summoned to the Piliyandala Police this morning.  The police stated that the summons was issued to obtain a statement regarding the attack on the house of journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrema. Prior to the attack, Pushpika de Silva had joined a discussion on an internet channel run by Chamuditha Samarawickrema. A number of controversial issues were revealed and various parties have taken legal action in this regard. A statement from Pushpika de Silva has been summoned as an extension of the ongoing investigation into the attack.  Mr. Samarawickrema’s house was attacked on the 14th and no arrests have been made so far.

A special notice for Sri Lankans live in Ukraine

The Ministry of External Affairs has instructed Sri Lankans living in Ukraine to be vigilant in the light of the current situation in Ukraine. The Ministry of External Affairs urges Sri Lankans living in Ukraine to refrain from non-essential travel. The embassy in Ankara is currently working closely with students in Ukraine to ensure their well-being, the foreign ministry said. The ministry said six of the 14 Sri Lankan students in Ukraine had temporarily left the country and were in close contact with other students through the Sri Lankan embassy in Ankara.
