Shortly after Mahinda Rajapaksa became President in 2005, a letter addressed to him by then Minister Mangala Samaraweera was revealed by former President Chandrika Kumaratunga.

Along with a note on her social media account, she states that Mangala Samaraweera had sent the letter stating that he would not attend the party executive council meetings held to remove him from the post of SLFP chairman.
