The most prevalent coronavirus in Sri Lanka has been identified as a subtype of the Delta genus.

Dr Chandima Jeewandara of the University of Jayewardenepura states that the variant was named AY-28. Mr Jeewandara said that this variant, which was originally identified by Sri Lanka, has already been projected in three countries around the world.

He said the virus has been identified in 8% of cases in Turkey, 4% in India and 3% in Russia.
