Sri Lankan Rupee reached Rs. 200 limit against US dollar

The daily exchange report of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) Sri Lankan Rupee has further depreciated against the US Dollar. In third time in the country’s history Sri Lankan rupees selling rate exceeded Rs 200 Today(March 16) The current buying rate of the US Dollar stands at Rs. 195.28 and selling rate of the US dollar stands at Rs. 200.06. The selling rate of the US dollar stood at Rs.200.47 on April 09, 2020 and this is the highest selling rate recorded for a US dollar since then.

A train hits bus in Talaimannar; One person dead, several injured

A train hit a private bus at the railway crossing in Talaimannar at around 2.30 p.m. today ( March 16). The train was traveling from Colombo Fort to Talaimannar. One person was dead and nearly 20 others were left wounded and hospitalized. The wounded passengers were admitted to the Mannar Hospital. It is reported that two of them were in critical condition. The driver of the bus has been taken into police custody and Mannar Police is conducting further investigations.

CID arrested Azath Salley

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested the Former Governor of Western Province Azath Salley today evening. (March 16).Coordinating officer of the Attorney General Nishara Jayaratne states that the arrest was made on the advice of the Attorney General. Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana said that provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism (PTA) is keep Salley under detained and interrogated. This is because of a controversial statements Azath Salley made with regard of the law of the country as the Leader of the National Unity Front (NUF). He had stated that he will only respect the Quran, the Hadiths and Shariah but not the laws of the government.

Suspect was arrested for pretending as a policeman

A 36 years old man arrested in pannipitiyata area yesterday (March 15) by officers from the Western Province South Crimes Division. The suspect was impersonated a police sub inspecter since long period of time. It is reported that suspect had had a fake ID card as a police sub inspector. Also he had engaged in various type of crimes using this new fake identity as a policemen. He even had posted pictures on social media posing as a policeman wearing police uniforms. He was identified as a resident from Rakwana and going to appear before the Maharagama magistrate’s court today.

Paddy Marketing Board decided to convert Paddy stocks in to rice

Stocks of paddy purchased from the farmers by the Paddy Marketing Board decided to convert in to rice immediately by the Cabinet of Ministers. The Department of Government Information stated that the rice stocks will be distributed continuously through the network of Sathosa. There is a lack of adequate stoks of rice currently in the market. This decision has been taken as an alternative to take the pice under the controll.
