Parliamentarian Sahan Pradeep joins Badminton World Championships

Gampaha District Coordinating Committee Chairman and Gampaha District Parliamentarian Sahave Pradeep Withana, the only Badminton Champion from Diyawanna have been selected for the World Veterans Badminton Championship. The tournament will be held in Seville, Spain from the 25th of this month to the 5th of next month. Sahan Pradeep is an alumnus of Kadawatha Maha Bodhi College and Kadawatha Maha Vidyalaya and has represented the College Prefect, Sports Leader and Cadet Corps. He also won the Gampaha District Badminton Championship in 2019, the Gampaha District Championship in the Over 40s event, the runner up All-Island Badminton Championship in Anuradhapura and the All Island Championship in the 2021 Nuwara Eliya Championship. In the doubles finals of the 2021 Western Province All Island Badminton Finals, a team player could not compete due to an injury to his foot and won the runner-up position. He has also served as the President of the All Ceylon Elle Federation in 2018 and 2019. This is the first time that a Member of Parliament has participated in a World Badminton Championship representing Sri Lanka. The tournament has been approved by the Ministry of Sports or recommendation of the Badminton Association. Accordingly, the Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Minister of Finance Basil Rajapaksa and the Chief Government Whip Johnston Fernando have given their permission to participate in this tournament.

Jaffna Magistrate’s Court has obtained a restraining order prohibiting the celebration of Mahavira day which celebrates the LTTE

Kopay Police say that the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court has obtained a restraining order prohibiting the celebration of ‘Mahavira Day’ at the Jaffna University during the Week. The order was issued by Jaffna Magistrate Peter Paul after the Kopay Police reported to the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court on the preparations for the Jaffna University Heroes’ Day celebrations and the dangers of disturbing public order. Accordingly, a group of activists including the President and Secretary of the Jaffna University Students ‘Union have been barred from celebrating Heroes’ Day and no student has been allowed to celebrate at the university in a manner that would disturb the public order, police said. Jaffna University students have been seen secretly celebrating Maha Viru for the past few years during the Maha Viru Week from November 21 to 27.

A car crashed into the Christmas parade

 Five people have been killed and at least 40 injured in a car crash at a Christmas rally in the US state of Wisconsin. The car was driven by a group of people attending a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin. According to foreign sources, a large number of dancers, school bands and politicians participated in the protest which was held (22nd) evening. There was video footage of people breaking into roadblocks and colliding with a speeding car. After the incident, the police had evacuated everyone and deployed heavy security in the area and it is reported that the suspect and the car have been identified.

Shy Hope gets a chance

West Indies have been allowed to replace Jeremy Solosano, who was hospitalized after being hit on the helmet by Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne, for the first Test.  Accordingly, the touring West Indies team has decided to deploy Shy Hope for the match as a “concussion sub”. After hitting the ball on the head yesterday, Solosano was admitted to a private hospital in Colombo for treatment and it was reported that his condition was not serious.

US bans travel to two European countries

 Health officials in the United States have warned Americans not to travel to two European countries because of the rising incidence of covia. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the State Department issued the announcement. Accordingly, it has been advised not to travel to Denmark and Germany. Covid infections are currently growing rapidly in Germany, Europe’s largest economy. Chancellor Angela Merkel has said the measures they have taken are not enough to control the spread of the disease. At present, the number of patients in hospitals in the country is increasing and the authorities are working to impose various restrictions in the country.

The shortage of vegetables in the market these days and the high prices have also affected the Parliament canteen. After the second reading vote of the budget yesterday, no vegetables were prepared in the dining hall of the Parliamentary staff and in the canteen of the journalists. A parliamentary spokesman said the situation was due to high vegetable prices and a shortage of vegetables in the market. Indian Deputy High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Rakesh Natraj Jayabaskaran, Head of the Indian Consulate in Jaffna, paid a courtesy call on the LTTE. The organization has participated in a ceremony to open a flower nursery in Jaffna and distribute plants wearing the Niyagala flower. The event was held at the ‘Kittu’ or Sangilian Park in Nallur, Jaffna on the morning of the 20th and was organized by the Tamil National Green Movement to mark the planting month of November. Deputy High Commissioner of India Rakesh Nataraj Jayabaskaran was the Chief Guest at the event which was organized by the former Minister of Agriculture of the Northern Province Ponnathurai Integration at Sangilian Park. The Deputy High Commissioner of India and other invitees were received by the organizers with a Nigella flower, the flower of the LTTE. The Deputy High Commissioner of India also participated in the plant distribution program organized with the participation of the drought victims. The event will be held from the 20th to the 26th at the Sangilian Park and will also feature the LTTE’s Heroes’ Week.

Corona Infections are doubled in recent weeks

The Government Nurses’ Association says the number of cases of the corona has doubled in recent weeks. Residents of the Galpatha area have alleged that the MP had behaved drunkenly and obscenely harassing the residents of the area. The Member of Parliament was arrested following a telephone call made to the Police Emergency Response Unit after he had tied himself to a power pole on the side of the road. After his arrest, it was confirmed that he was drunk after being referred to a doctor. The MP is scheduled to appear in court today.
