Angelo Mathews informs SLC that he is considering to leave

Sri Lankan cricketer Angelo Mathews has reportedly informed Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) that he is considering retirement from international cricket. According to SLC sources, Mathews (34) has informed Sri Lanka Cricket that he is currently discussing the matter and will inform his decision in the upcoming weeks. Angelo Mathews was not considered for the limited overs games after selectors decided to go with a young side. Dropping Mathews from ODIs was controversial as his ODI outings had largely been good. He was the Player of the Match in the second-to-last match he had played – against West Indies in March last year – for his four wickets. Before that, he had also been one of Sri Lanka’s best batters at the 2019 World Cup, and had averaged 52.50 with the bat in 2018, and 63.66 in 2017. Mathews’ fielding and fitness standards had appeared to have improved substantially by the start of 2020 as well. Mathews along with several other senior cricketers had objected to the new central contract points system over transperancy issues. Later, senior players along with Mathews had agreed to sign Central contracts. All players who had been short listed for the Indian series had signed tour contracts after several rounds of discussions last night. (NewsWire)
