Son-in-law strangles farther in law at wedding

A man was strangled to death over a family dispute at a wedding party. It was in Tissamaharama, Virahela area. The husband of the deceased’s eldest daughter had beaten the daughter’s father to death yesterday (16) following a dispute with family members during a wedding ceremony.  The deceased has been identified as a 54 year old resident of Padavigama, Lunugamvehera. The suspect has been identified and has fled the area, police said. Tissamaharama Police is conducting further investigations.

Big Bash League – Melbourne Stars win easily

 The Melbourne Stars won the Australian Big Bash League Cricket Tournament yesterday. Defeating that Brisbane Heat team. The Brisbane Heat won the toss and elected to bat first. The Brisbane Heat scored 149 runs for the loss of 6 wickets at the end of 20 overs. Ben Duckett scored 51 off 42 balls with two sixes and three fours for the Brisbane Heat. Chris Lynn scored 28 points. Chasing a target of 150, the Melbourne Stars chased down the target by just 2 wickets in 13 overs with 5 balls to spare. Joe Clarke scored 62 off 36 balls with one six and nine fours for the Melbourne Stars.

The United States has won the 2021 Mrs world Beauty Pageant this year. Shaleen Ford, a 37 – year – old married woman from the United States, was crowned Mrs World. The Mrs World beauty pageant was selected after several days of competition in the US state of Las Vegas.  Second place went to Jordan and third place to the United Arab Emirates. Mrs. Pushpika de Silva, the controversial Mrs Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka also participated in this competition. She entered the final 15 and competed for fourth place in the tournament.

Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal says the country’s economy is better off than it was a few months ago.  He added that the country’s economy is already improving. He said that the tourism sector is gradually recovering and good progress is being made in other sectors as well. He said this while he was addressing the media when he visited Kandy to meet the Malwatta and Asgiriya nahimi.

Be prepared to cut off electricity for four hours a day – The Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers Association

The Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers’ Association warns that a major power cut is expected due to fuel shortages and declining water levels in reservoirs. The people are requested to be prepared to cut off electricity for four hours a day, said the President of the Association Saumya Kumarawadu. He says that the Ceylon Electricity Board has only 3000 metric tons of diesel available for two or three days and only enough fuel for 22 days. Accordingly, the CEB will have to cut off power after three days and reduce the demand, failing which it will not be able to maintain the balance of the power grid, he said. Restrictions on the use of water from reservoirs for hydropower generation have been encountered due to the fact that the incoming water is being managed primarily for agricultural, drinking and environmental purposes.

World number one tennis champion deported from Australia

An Australian federal court has rejected an appeal by world number one tennis champion Novak Djokovic against the revocation of his visa. Novak Djokovic arrived in Australia recently to participate in the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne. However, he was not allowed to enter Australia by the Australian government due to his violation of the law and appealed against it.  The appeal was also rejected by a federal court, foreign media reported.  He is expected to be deported from Australia.

India’s game which ignored the covid risk

The number of daily vovid infections in neighboring India, which is under Omicron invasion, is increasing rapidly.  However, despite the risk of an epidemic, a bullfight was reportedly organized in Tamil Nadu. The people of Tamil Nadu call these gonpora shows ‘Jallikattu’. In Tamil Nadu, the festival begins after the January harvest. In the ‘Jallikattu’ competition, a cow is chased and wrestled. Bullfighting does not take place at the festival, but animal rights activists call the ‘jallikattu’ bullfights a cruel act.  Accordingly, the Supreme Court in 2014 banned bullfighting, which has been a popular pastime among the people of Tamil Nadu for centuries. However, with the approval of the Government of India to hold ‘Jallikattu’ bullfights again in 2017, those competitions will be held again throughout the state of Tamil Nadu.

The first ODI between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe today

The first one day cricket match between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe will be played today (16).  The match is scheduled to start at 02.30 pm at the Pallekele Stadium in Kandy. Zimbabwe have won three of the last five matches between the two countries, while Sri Lanka have won just two. It is important for the Sri Lankan team to win this tournament to stay among the top eight teams for the next World Cup.

Four drug raids, including a woman, arrested

 Four persons including a woman have been arrested during drug raids in several areas. Police said that the suspects were arrested in Mannar, Grandpass and Panadura areas. Two suspects were arrested while transporting ice drugs in a three-wheeler near Thanapuram Junction in Mannar. The suspects, aged 25 and 30, were residents of Mannar and 50 grams of ice was found in their possession. Meanwhile, a 40-year-old man was arrested in the Wadullawatta area in Grandpass with 05 grams of heroin. Police also arrested a 44-year-old woman with 105 grams of heroin in the Rathuwatta area in Panadura.

A person who went on a pilgrimage to Sri Pada has died

A person has died due to a sudden illness while going on a pilgrimage to Sri Pada. The deceased has been identified as a 75-year-old resident of Nawalapitiya. The deceased had come with his family members on a pilgrimage to Sri Pada where he had suddenly fallen ill. A police officer who was on duty at the time was informed and arrangements were made to bring him down immediately. Police say he died at the hospital. The body of the deceased has been placed at the Hatton Dikoya Hospital and an autopsy is to be conducted. Nallathanniya police are conducting further investigations.
