Minister of State Dayasiri Jayasekara says that people are afraid that the country will be in a huge shortage of dollars.
As a result, some businessmen have stockpiled sugar for the next nine months, he said.
Meanwhile, the Controller of Imports has taken action to suspend all licenses issued for the importation of sugar into the country.
It is reported that this decision has been taken due to the current dollar reserve in the country.
Due to this, a situation has arisen where the price of the sugar will be increased up to Rs. 140 per kilo of white sugar and Rs. 150 per kilo of red sugar.
