Sri Lanka is ranked third out of 194 countries in the world in terms of corona control
Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella says that Sri Lanka is ranked third out of 194 countries in the world in terms of corona control. He said that it was the highest achievement of the people of this country as a country in this century. He also states that due to the successful vaccination in the country, the lives of the people have been given a chance. He said this while he was addressing the media at a program held at the Urban Development Authority. He further stated that the aim is to save the lives of the people through maximum vaccination and many Sri Lankans are now successfully conducting the third vaccination in a year.
Station masters started a strike
The General Manager of Railways says that some office trains and all long distance trains have been canceled due to the strike. However, the General Manager of Railways further stated that arrangements have been made to run 80 office trains. The Station Masters’ Association has commenced a 24 hour token strike from midnight yesterday (12). The President of the Railway Station Masters’ Association Sumedha Somaratne stated that the trade union action has been initiated based on several demands including the unannounced cancellation of long distance train services.
Popular American singer passes away
Popular American pop singer Ronnie Spector has died, according to foreign media reports. Foreign media quoted her family sources as saying that she had died of cancer. She was 78 years old when she died. Her singing career started with her older sister and another cousin attracted fans. The song “Be My Baby,” was extremely popular among fans.
A foreigner falls with a parachute
A foreigner who was traveling in a parachute fell and was injured, reports say from the Lulkandura area. Police said that the parachute had landed in the Ralimangoda area when it had fallen into a tree about 30 feet high. The foreigner injured in the accident has been admitted to the Kandy Hospital. The victim was a 35-year-old Russian national. Galaha Police are conducting further investigations.
Welikada verdict – Emil Ranjan sentenced to death
Former Prisons Commissioner Emil Ranjan Lamahewa has been sentenced to death by the Colombo High Court yesterday day (12). Neomal Rangajeewa, the then Inspector of the Police Narcotics Bureau, who was the first accused in the case, was acquitted by the court. 27 inmates were killed during a search operation conducted by the Police Special Task Force (STF) at Welikada Prison on November 09, 2012. Meanwhile, a group of officers including the then Commanding Officer of the Police Special Task Force, the Deputy Inspector General of Police were also injured.
Caroline Jury, Pushpika de Silva and Chula to the Conciliation Board
Colombo Chief Magistrate Buddhika C. Wijewardena has summoned Miss World Caroline Jury, Miss Sri Lanka Bride Pushpika de Silva and model Chula Padmendran to appear before the Mediation Board. Caroline Jury and Chula Padmendran have been accused of forcibly removing the crown on the head of Pushpika de Silva, who wore the crown at the 2020 Mrs Sri Lanka beauty pageant and inflicting minor injuries on her head, as well as criminal intimidation. Police had earlier reported in court that state property is worth Rs. 700,000 had been damaged in the incident. Cinnamon Gardens Police have filed charges against Caroline Jury and Chula Padmendran for criminal intimidation by dropping the charge under the Public Property Act as the organizers of the Mrs Sri Lanka beauty pageant have now covered the loss.
The two children in Kotadeniyawa are not sent home but sent to an orphanage
Minuwangoda Magistrate Kesara C. Wijewardena has ordered that the two boys who were found missing for 44 days in Kotadeniyawa be detained at the Makola Orphanage until March 7. The magistrate ordered the probation officer to submit a full report on the two children aged 10 and 12 on March 7 and after receiving the report, the magistrate said that action would be taken about the two children. After meeting these children, their mothers refused to go into custody. They have been referred to an orphanage until a solution is found due to the problematic situation regarding the home environment
Imaduwa OIC’s friend allowed to drive drunk on highway
Police interrogate a drunk driver who was about to enter the Southern Expressway from Imaduwa to Galle. The driver admits that he was driving under the influence of alcohol and told the OIC that he had been drinking with the Imaduwa Police OIC. The OIC then obscenely calls his junior officer and instructs him to “send him”. The incident was reported in July 2021, shortly after Corona’s launch. The Police Media Unit stated that a disciplinary inquiry has been launched against the OIC.
Hungarian Foreign Minister arrives in Sri Lanka
A delegation led by the Hungarian Foreign Minister arrived in Sri Lanka this morning (12) for an official visit. The Hungarian Foreign Minister and his delegation were received by Tharaka Balasuriya, Minister of State for Regional Cooperation. It is located at the Special Guest Terminal at the Katunayake International Airport. The delegation also includes a group of businessmen from that country.
A cycling race on the highway
Arrangements have been made to hold a cycling race on the Central Expressway. Prior to the opening of the Mirigama – Kurunegala section, the tournament will be held on the 14th under the full supervision of the Sri Lanka Cycling Federation under the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Highways. The Ministry of Sports said in a statement that the event, which will be held in accordance with national and international competition rules and guidelines, will be a unique experience for Sri Lankan men’s and women’s cycling. The total distance of the tournament is km. 80. The tournament will be held in several categories, namely the Super and Under 23 Men’s, Junior Men’s and Super Women’s.
