An army team leaves Sri Lanka for an operation in Lebanon

The Chief of Army Staff, Major General Vikum Liyanage presided over the congratulatory ceremony for the departing troops of the 13th Brigade Operation UNIFIL (UNIFIL) in Lebanon at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake.

The squadron consists of 10 officers and 115 other ranks. As the first phase, 08 officers and 67 other ranks left for Lebanon on 05th this month.

As the commanding officer of that team Led by Lieutenant Colonel SMDN Samarakoon RWP, Senior Officer, Sri Lanka Infantry.

This team is from the Sri Lanka Army including Engineering Corps, Signal Corps, Infantry Regiment, Mechanized Infantry Regiment, Commando Regiment, Special Forces, Engineering Services Regiment, Service Corps, Medical Corps, Ordnance Corps, Electrical and Mechanical Corps, Police, Navy Representing officers and other ranks.

The specialty of this group is that for the first time, one female officer and seven female soldiers representing the Sri Lanka Army Women’s Brigade have joined the United Nations Interim Task Force (UNIFIL) operation in Lebanon. Currently, the 12th Battalion of the Sri Lanka Lions Regiment is engaged in this operation and the UNASA has commended them on several occasions for their dedicated service.
