Fishermen rescued from Maldivian waters

 Navy rescues five Sri Lankan fishermen stranded in Maldivian waters Navy Media Spokesman Capt. Indika de Silva stated that a trawler consisting of 06 fishermen had left the Beruwala seas for fishing. It has been reported to the Navy that the fishing vessel has not been in contact with the land since the 4th of this month. The Navy said that 5 fishermen were rescued from the trawler yesterday (07) morning. One fisherman on board the boat has gone missing and the five rescued fishermen are being brought to the Galle harbour, the Navy said.

A decision is made about the power cut in the country

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) says that it does not expect any power cuts throughout the island today (08). A spokesman for the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) told that there was no need for a power cut as the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) could generate electricity with the supply of fuel. The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) has suspended the supply of fuel due to non-payment by the CEB, disrupting power generation at the Sapugaskanda and Kukule Ganga power plants. Due to this power outages were experienced in several parts of the island yesterday (07) and the day before yesterday (06) from 05.30 pm to 09.30 pm.

Dollars from the Central Bank given to release the trapped containers

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has released US $ 5 million to release containers of essential goods stranded at the Port of Colombo.  The Ministry of Trade stated that a sum of US $ 14 million is required to release the containers of essential goods stranded at the Port of Colombo. The Ministry of Trade stated that US $ 5 million has been released and the balance will be paid by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka by next Monday. The Ministry of Trade recently submitted a report to the Central Bank containing details of the goods of the importers of essential commodities. It is reported that more than a thousand containers containing essential food items including rice, sugar, dhal and potatoes are still stuck in the Colombo port due to the shortage of dollars in the country.

Chinese Foreign Minister arrives in Sri Lanka today

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is scheduled to pay a two day official visit to Sri Lanka today (08). The Chinese Foreign Minister will pay a visit to Sri Lanka today and tomorrow (09), the Ministry of External Affairs said. The 65th anniversary of Sino-Sri Lankan diplomatic relations will be commemorated at the same time he visited Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, it is reported that the Chinese Foreign Minister will present a number of investment proposals during his visit to Sri Lanka.

Trincomalee oil tanker agreement signed

 It is reported that the agreement to develop the Trincomalee oil tank complex was signed yesterday evening (06). The signatories to the agreement include the Secretary to the Treasury, the Commissioner-General of Lands, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, the Ceylon IOC and Trinco Petroleum Terminal Pvt. Ltd. Accordingly, 24 fuel tanks will be allocated for the business activities of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation. Lanka IOC is allocating 14 tanks in its existing Lower Tank Complex for its operations. Only 14 tanks used by IOC will be leased to them for another 50 years. The agreement will develop the remaining 61 tanks through a company called Trinco Petroleum Terminal Pvt. Ltd., in which the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation will own 51% and Lanka IOC 49%.

There will be more Power outages today – CEB

The Ceylon Electricity Board says that there will be power outages in some parts of the island today as well. The CEB says that the power outage could be due to difficulties in meeting the daily requirement or power outages. Meanwhile, power supply to several areas including Colombo was disrupted on several occasions last night. The power supply was disrupted due to a breakdown at a generator at the Kelanitissa power plant.

People’s Bank pays to the Chinese fertilizer ship

People’s Bank today decided to pay US $ 6.9 million to the company that owned the controversial Chinese fertilizer ship. People’s Bank stated that due to the lifting of the enjoining order imposed by the Colombo Commercial High Court, it was decided to pay the amount with the ship. Although the fertilizer ship was not handed over to Sri Lanka, it was stated in court that an agreement had been reached between the two parties to return the standard fertilizer. Accordingly, the money is to be paid to the relevant company through the People’s Bank.

Vaccination of children between 12 and 15 years begins today

Covid vaccination for children between the ages of 12 and 15 will commence from today.  Accordingly, an anti-covid vaccination program will be launched with the involvement of the health and security forces throughout the island. The Minister of Health Keheliya Rambukwella stated that parallel to the vaccination of school children, those who have not yet received the booster dose will be given the same booster dose at the same places.

A woman mysteriously killed in Horowpathana

Police have found the body of a woman who mysteriously died. Police say that the body was found in the Nikawewa area in Horowpathana.  The woman, who is 5 feet 9 inches tall, is between 55 and 60 years old. According to a report issued by the residents of the area, the body was found in a jungle area in Nikawewa. The magistrate instructed the police to investigate the incident. The woman has not been identified yet and her body has been placed at the Anuradhapura Hospital morgue. Horowpathana Police are conducting further investigations into the death.
