People in North Korea are not allowed to smile for 11 days

 Foreign media have reported about a country that banned its citizens from even smiling for 11 days. That country is North Korea ruled by Kim Jong Yun. Foreign media have reported that an 11 day mourning period has been declared in memory of his father Kim Il Sung. The mourning period has been declared from December 17. During this period, the people of the country are prohibited from drinking alcohol and engaging in shopping.  It is also reported that it is forbidden to engage in recreational activities or any celebrations during the mourning period.

There will be power cuts

The Ministry of Power and Energy states that there will be power cuts in some areas.  Ministry Media Spokesperson Sulakshana Jayawardena stated this situation has arisen due to the incomplete generation capacity of the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant Accordingly, the power supply will be cut off for half an hour and 40 minutes in some areas as required, he said. He said that this situation has arisen due to the ongoing repairs to the power generator of the power plant and that these restrictions will have to be imposed to manage the system when the demand for electricity increases at night. He further expressed confidence that the situation would improve after reconnecting the system as soon as the repair work on the generators was completed

Sri Lanka still sells fuel at a lower price than India- Central Bank Governor

Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal says Sri Lanka still sells fuel at a lower price than India. He points out that a liter of premium petrol which costs 264 rupees in India sells for 210 rupees in Sri Lanka. He also says the exchange crisis cannot be subsidized to stay longer. He added that controlling the supply of fuel would reduce the flow of foreign exchange for fuel.

A mysterious ship anchored off the coast of Batticaloa and dumping sand

TNA MP Shanakayan Rasamanikkam says that sand is being dumped by a ship anchored off the coast of Batticaloa. He also says that the sand unloaded from that ship will be transported by another ship at night. He also said that armed officers would divert those approaching. The MP has said this while posting a note on his social media account.

Podi Lacey further remanded

Janith Madushanka alias ‘Podi Lasi’, a powerful drug dealer has been further remanded. The suspect was produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate today (21) on charges of drug trafficking along with officers of the Police Narcotics Bureau. The CID stated before Colombo Chief Magistrate Buddhika Sri Ragala that he had committed an offence under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. However, Officials of the department have informed the court that information has come to light that the suspect has been invoffences drug trafficking and conspiracy as well as offenses under the Firearms Amendment Act. 

World Health Organization requests cancellation of parties

The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for the cancellation of events planned for the upcoming holiday season to control the spread of omicron. The organization says to be more responsible during the upcoming Christmas holidays. The group called for the move to curb the spread of omicron, and said it would be “appropriate” to cancel all major events, including Christmas parties. They further urge us not to hesitate to make difficult decisions to save many lives. World Health Leader Tedros Gabrias says Omicron is spreading at a significantly faster rate than the Delta covid virus strain.

Rafael Nadal infected with covid 19

Rafael Nadal has been infected with the covid-19 virus in Spain. He mentioned this in a post on his Twitter account. Rafael Nadal returned to his country recently to participate in the Abu Dhabi Open Tennis Tournament.  There he underwent a PCR test which revealed that he was infected with covid-19 He had posted a note on his Twitter account stating that he was infected with Kovid and that his relatives were being informed through this message.  Rafael Nadal loses to Andy Murray of the United Kingdom in the semi-finals of the Abu Dhabi Open. At the same time, Rafael Nadal had to withdraw from the tournament.

The Chancellor of the University of Colombo Ven. GMOA has commenced a nationwide strike from 08.00 am today.

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has commenced a nationwide strike from 08.00 am today. The union says the strike will be based on seven demands. As a result of the strike, hospital activities have been disrupted and people seeking treatment have been inconvenienced. The strike in emergency services, intensive care units, cancer hospitals, kidney hospitals, are not included to this strike.

Bus fares will be increased by 20%

The bus unions say they will increase bus fares by 20% based on measures taken to increase the price of a liter of diesel. They also say that the minimum bus fare will have to be increased to 25 rupees. The All Ceylon Private Bus Owners’ Association states that the increase in fares was in view of the prevailing increase in fuel prices as well as spare parts prices and the increase in lubricant prices. However, the union says that bus fares should be increased by a higher percentage due to the increase in fuel prices. They also point out that the collapse of the public transport service has created a heavy traffic jam as people have been forced to travel in private vehicles.
