The Price of rice increased

The owners of the major rice mills in Polonnaruwa have increased the price of rice once again. Accordingly, the price of Kiri Samba rice has been increased by Rs. 30 per kilo and Samba Nadu rice by Rs. 15 per kilo, said an official of a major rice company. With this price increase, a kilo of curry samba rice will cost Rs. 195, a kilo of samba rice Rs. 155 and a kilo of Nadu rice Rs. 130. He added that the price hike was done in consultation with other major mill owners.

A man dressed as the Prime Minister and wearing a mask with his face came in the middle of the farmers’ protest and Farmers hooted at the man and pulled on a scarf to protest. Correspondents there said that the incident was planned by the protest organizers.

A 16-year-old schoolboy was killed and another seriously injured in a road accident in the Ulukkulam area in Vavuniya

A 16-year-old schoolboy was killed and another seriously injured in a road accident in the Ulukkulam area in Vavuniya, police said. It has been revealed that the student was traveling on a motorbike on the Ulukkulam-Vavuniya road when he collided with another motorbike and fell into a lorry. The schoolboy and the other motorcyclist who were in a critical condition in the accident and the boy has died after being admitted to the Vavuniya General Hospital. The cause of the incident has not been revealed yet. The deceased has been identified as Hansa Dilsan Mihiranga, a 16-year-old student of Sirisumana Vidyalaya, Ulukkulama. The driver of the lorry has been arrested following the accident and Ulukkulam police are conducting further investigations.

The government has not allowed the people to feel the shock of the rising cost of living- Sanjeewa Edirimanne

Sri Lanka People’s Front (SLPP) MP Sanjeewa Edirimanne says that the government has not allowed the people to feel the shock of the rising cost of living in the midst of the corona pandemic. However, this does not mean that the people have received all the consolation, he said.  However, he said that the government had intervened to reduce the pressure. He added that the year 2022 will be an economically promising year. He said this while he was addressing a press conference at his residence.

Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena says that as the prices of goods are determined by the international community, it is not possible to keep the prices of goods in Sri Lanka low while the prices of goods in the world are increasing.  In such a situation, if there is anyone who knows how to keep the prices of goods low in the country, he asked him to tell him that method. He also said that the prices of commodities such as fuel, gas and milk powder are determined not by our country but by the international market. Therefore, when the prices of these goods go up in the world, the government will have to increase the prices in Sri Lanka as well, he said. He said this while he was responding to a question posed by journalists.

A Training for long distance runners in Sri Lanka from Kenya

As a result of a recent discussion between the Kenyan Minister of Sports and the Minister of Youth and Sports, Development Coordination and Monitoring and the Minister of State for Digital Technology and Enterprise Development Namal Rajapaksa an opportunity was taken for the middle and long distance running athletes in the country. During the last few days, the Minister attended several fruitful meetings between Sri Lanka and the Government of Kenya to enhance bilateral and community friendship. In particular, he discussed with Kenyan Minister of Sports Dr. Amina Mohamed the need to further enhance the skills level of Sri Lankan athletes in the field of athletics. As a result, Sri Lanka and Kenya agreed to work together, sharing sports resources as well as veterans’ experiences. Accordingly, 10 Sri Lankan medium and long distance runners will be sent to Kenya for mid- and long-term training later this year or in the first quarter of next year. The Minister has taken this opportunity to provide opportunities to middle and long distance runners with the aim of enabling our talented athletes to hone their skills by providing proper training and regular incentives. World-class athletes such as Eliud Kipchoge (5000m – Men), Abel Kirui (marathon – Men), Ezekiel Kemboi (3000m – Men), Hellen Obiri (5000m – Women), Beatrice Chepkoech (3000m – Women – steeplechase) Training in a country like Kenya.It is a great opportunity for Sri Lankan athletes to train in a country like that. It is the hope of the Ministry of Youth and Sports that the Sri Lankan athletes will be able to take advantage of such opportunities, train and hone their skills to achieve international success.

Duminda Silva recieved an interim order from the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court  issued an interim order directing the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) to take over the land on Darley Road, Colombo 10, which was acquired on the advice of the Chairman and other authorities, without any further action, and to maintain. Granting permission to hear a fundamental rights petition filed by the relevant private company against the acquisition of a land on Darley Road, Colombo, on a directive by a Cabinet decision for a low income housing project, on the instructions of the Chairman of the National Housing Development Authority, R. Dumindha Silva and other authorities. The court also set February 2 as the date for hearing the fundamental rights petition, stating that it was the legal duty of the Supreme Court to investigate whether the land acquisition had taken place legally. Youths have attacked by a armed gang in the Puttalam area demanding the demolition of all traditional Islamic mosques and the construction of Wahabist mosques. A youth who was seriously injured in the attack has been admitted to the Puttalam Hospital. On a previous occasion, a relative of the youth who had come to the mosques to practice  religion had also been assaulted in this manner. The complaint alleges that the attackers continued to threaten to join Wahabism instead of attending traditional mosques.  Three persons arrested in connection with the attack have been remanded after being produced in court.
