Health staffs engaged in a islandwide protest

Health staff at hospitals across the country are stepping down to launch protests today morning. Saman Ratnapriya, President of the Government Nurses Association, says that the protests are based on six demands, including protesting against the recruitment of pregnant women. He says health staff will be out of all their services from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. and will be on strike from 12 to 1 p.m. He said 44 health unions were participating in the protests

The 2021 Mrs World Contest scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka has been cancelled and It will be held in Las Vegas, USA. The organizing committee has announced that this year’s Miss World pageant will not be held in Sri Lanka due to the Corona pandemic. The organizers regret that it could not be held in Sri Lanka as planned.

Sri Lanka reported 82 covid 19 related deaths

Another 82 corona deaths are confirmed by the Director-General of Health and it marks the highest number of corona deaths in a single day in the country. Accordingly, the total number of deaths due to corona infection in the country has risen to 4,727.  Meanwhile, another 2543 corona infections have been identified within the day. At the same time, the total number of infected people identified in the country has increased to 318,737.

Strict travel restrictions should be imposed as soon as possible – Dr Padma Gunaratne

According to the Sri Lanka Medical Association, the delta strain of the coronavirus has started spreading in Sri Lanka these days. Its chairperson, Dr Padma Gunaratne, points out that the delta variant spreading rapidlyin Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara. She also points out that it would be very difficult to control this as a country if travel restrictions were not strictly imposed on this situation. She also stressed that travel restrictions must be imposed at this time. Commenting on this, Dr. Hemantha Herath, Media Spokesperson of the Ministry of Health said that the decision will have to be taken as it is if the current situation cannot be reviewed and balanced.

Social media should be banned – Nimal Siripala de Silva

Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva says that there is no legal capacity in this country to suppress or regulate social networks.  He also said that social media should be banned or regulated properly and that he had stated this in the Cabinet several times. He also pointed out that China is not active on social media and we should follow those rules.

The number of corona deaths reported daily is inaccurate- Ravi Kumudesh

The number of corona deaths reported daily is inaccurate and could be double or triple, including the number of deaths in hospitals without proper treatment,  the Consortium of Paramedics said. Its chairman Ravi Kumudesh points out that the number of preventable deaths in these daily deaths has increased to a large extent. He also points out that the number of people who are infected today is not the number of people who are diagnosed by searching operations but the people who  find they may infected with corona and visited  hospital. Therefore, there are four to five times as many infected people in the society as are currently reported by the government, he said. He added that the ignorant behavior of certain people of the government to show that the pandemic was under control had led to an increase in the pandemic.

Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage has been infected with the corona virus. This has been confirmed by a rapid antigen test conducted yesterday.  However, the Minister is scheduled to conduct an another test tomorrow to ascertain further and  the Minister is currently under quarantine.  Mr. Aluthgamage was a person who received both doses of Astrazenica injection for corona.

Another 74 corona deaths are reported by the Government Information Department. At the same time, the number of corona deaths in Sri Lanka has risen to 4,645. To date, 2423 new infections have been identified. The number of infected people identified with them in the country has increased to 316192.
