Genetic analysis of corona samples from corona infected people in various parts of the country, including Colombo, has confirmed
84 out of 88 people as infected with the Delta strain.
Dr. Chandima Jeewandara of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura said that the number of infected people with the data type identified in Sri Lanka so far is 201.
He said that most of the Delta infected people were identified from the Colombo area and also from Kandy, Matale, Ratnapura, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, Vavuniya, Malabe and Gampaha areas.
He further said that they had identified three other mutations in the Delta virus found in Sri Lanka and suspects it could be the main reason for the virus to spread so fast.
He added that this situation could lead to the development of a new corona variety in the country in the future.
