Indias corona variant named as “variant of global concern”- WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the coronavirus variant first found in India last year as a “variant of global concern”. It named as the B.1.617 and it has found thatmutation spreads more easily than other variants and it has already spread to more than 30 countries;the WHO said. The mutation is elevated from a “variant of interest” to a “variant of concern” (VOC). It shows evidence of fulfilling at least one of following criteria, including easy transmission, more severe illness, reduced neutralisation by antibodies or reduced effectiveness of treatment and vaccines.BBC

COVID 19 pandemic Sri Lanka – counrty is at its worst level at corona infections- moving as same level as India

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) says that despite the statistics on the spread of corona virus in Sri Lanka, the country is currently heading towards the worst possible situation in India. Dr. Prasad Colombage, a member of the executive committee of the association says that the government is once again being urged not to simply ignore the current situation. He added that this was not a simple event like the first wave but a very dangerous wave and there was a tendency for a serious increase in the number of patients in the coming days and that urgent action should be taken to address the possible difficulties.

Corona Technical Committee summoned – Risk is at 3rd level

COVID 19 3rd wave Sri Lanka – Army is supporting the corona vaccination

The medical teams of the three forces have joined process of administering the corona vaccine.Accordingly, Navy and Air Force health teams have been deployed in Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara districts for vaccination. Vaccination in Colombo Municipal Council area has been deployed by Army Health Officer teams.

Can AstraZeneca second dose replace with another vaccine?

Co-Cabinet Spokesman Udaya Gammanpila says that those who received the first dose of AstraZeneca should not have any fear of taking the second dose. He further said that according to the expert opinion, it is not a problem to get the first dose of one vaccine and the other dose of another vaccine. While joining a Cabinet decision briefing held today (May 11). The Co-Cabinet Spokesman further noted that steps will be taken to obtain the extra stock of AstraZeneca vaccine through the World Health Organization or from a country that has already purchased it like in Indonesia as well as in African countries or to obtain the required stock of vaccine to the country. Several countries have suspended the entry of passenger flights from Sri Lanka

Kuwait has decided to suspend passenger flights from Sri Lanka until further notice. Foreign media reported that the Kuwait government has decided to impose the ban on Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh because of the spread of the Covid-19 virus. The United Arab Emirates also announced yesterday (May 10) that it will suspend passenger flights from Sri Lanka from tomorrow (May 12). In addition, Malaysia and the Maldives have also suspended the entry of SriLankan passenger flights considering the present situation in the country.

Provincial travel restrictions from today

Travel restrictions between provinces will be activated from midnight today and given the increase in the spread of the corona virus, restrictions on movement between Districts would also be considered in the future. Corona 3rd wave in Sri Lanka- Wealthy people flee far away from Colombo

It is reported that a significant number of the country’s wealthy people living in the vicinity of the capital have now moved to other places outside Colombo. These people are running their core businesses in Colombo with the help of employees and stay away from Colombo. The main reason for this is the rapid rise of the third corona wave once again in the western provinces including Colombo.

Yesterday was marked as the deadliest day of the corona pandemic since it started. The death of 26 infected people was confirmed by the Director-General of Government Information yesterday.
