A protest is took that near the Pagiriwatta Road in Mirihana, blocking the access road to the President’s residence yesterday. They are demanding solutions to the problems in the country including electricity, gas and diesel.Later Tear gas has been fired at a protest near the President’s official residence. After the incident government took action to imposed curfew in Colombo North, Colombo South, Colombo Central, Nugegoda, Kelaniya and Mount Lavinia until further notice, and lifted the curfew at 5 am today. Presidential Media Unit report on the incident The statement issued by the Presidential Media Unit regarding the incident that took place in the Nugegoda area last night is as follows. —– The extremist group behind riotous behaviour. It is revealed that Organized extremists were among the protesters near the Jubilee Post in Nugegoda and behaved in a riotous manner and caused a violent situation. The group, carrying iron clubs, clubs and sticks, had provoked the protesters and marched towards the President’s residence in Mirihana Pangiriwatta, causing a riot. Many of those involved in the violence have been arrested and many have been identified as organized extremists. They have spearheaded the campaign calling for an Arab Spring in Sri Lanka. Nisal was hit in the head with a stone and videos were circulating of people carrying him while Varuna was seriously injured and bleeding from his head. Staff photographer Nisal said he was hit by a rock while taking pictures of the clash. “I was able to hide in a garden on the side of Pangiriwatta Road to avoid further injuries,” he said. Police imposed curfew in several areas last night and removed it at 5 this morning. The curfew was imposed in Colombo North, Colombo Central, Colombo South, Mirihana, Kelaniya and Mount Lavinia police areas. The incident took place in the Mirihana area in Nugegoda when rioters clashed with security forces and set fire to several vehicles. Several people injured in the clash have been hospitalized. Police say 45 people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Russia-Ukraine latest peace talks begin in Turkey

The latest round of peace talks aimed at resolving the war situation between Russia and Ukraine began on the 29th in Istanbul, Turkey.  The Russian-Ukrainian delegation had been arriving in Turkey since yesterday to attend the event. So far there have been three face-to-face discussions between the two countries. At one point, a virtual discussion was also organized over the Internet. But those discussions did not yield any results. Welcoming the representatives of the two countries, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, “We hope that these talks will benefit both countries as well as the region, because Turkey is deeply saddened by this conflict.” The Turkish President also hopes that the summit will provide an opportunity for future talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Vladimir Selensky.  According to foreign media reports, the Russian side has laid down several conditions for the talks to be successful. The basic condition is that Ukraine declares itself to be a neutral state, not affiliated with NATO. Ukraine has already agreed to this condition, but says its country needs security reassurances from the West as well as Russia before taking such a step. Meanwhile, the BBC reports that Roman Abromovich, a wealthy Russian businessman who has been a Russian envoy since the beginning of peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, has been poisoned.

Many tea factories have been shut down in Sri Lanka

Many tea factories have been shut down due to a shortage of diesel..  The estate authorities said that although there were plans to run factories with generators in the event of a power outage, there were serious problems with the lack of diesel.  Usually the leaves are put in the factory grinders and then grinded at once. Tea factory managers say the occasional power outage has disrupted the diesel process. When inquired about this, the Secretary to the Ministry of Plantation Industries Ravindra Hewawitharana said that steps will be taken to provide the required fuel to the tea industrialists under a special method after discussions with the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation. Former Minister Athauda Seneviratne passed away

Former Minister Athauda Seneviratne passed away this morning (31). Seneviratne was 90 years old when he died while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Colombo. Athauda Seneviratne entered politics from the Lanka Sama Samaja Party and was later elected to Parliament representing the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. He was the Kegalle District Leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party for a long time and was a senior politician who held a number of ministerial posts including Labor, Youth Affairs and Mineral Resources Development.

stocks of 40 drugs are limited

The Ministry of Pharmaceutical Products Supply and Regulation states that the stocks of 40 types of drugs in government hospitals will be sufficient for another three weeks only. Its Secretary Dr. Saman Ratnayake stated that arrangements have been made to bring all these drugs to the island as soon as possible.  He also stated that two types of drugs are not available in government hospitals at present.

The no-confidence motion, which alleges that Pakistan has plunged the country into a serious crisis due to poor management of its economy, is due to be debated next Thursday.
