New bodycam footages of George Floyd death; I am not a bad guy

A Minneapolis court has released new police bodycam footage of George Floyd pleading with officers during his arrest. He was saying: “I’m not a bad guy” for few times and the camera shows that police officer Derek Chauvin stucked his knee on Mr Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes, and Mr Floyd begging not to be harmed saying he had done nothing wrong. He also said on the clip “Please don’t shoot me… I just lost my mom.” and further after he handcuffed he continued to plead that he is not resisting them and “will do anything you tell me to”. Also the court took the ideas from the witnesses on the case and the youngest one was apologising for” not doing more”. And most of them were emotional on the case. The video footage of Derek Chauvin kneeling on George Floyd’s neck last May was watched around the world and that lead to a world wide protest against racism.

A beer container collides with a tile lorry ; Anuradhapura

A lorry and a beer container had collided at Moragoda on the Anuradhapura-Padeniya main road. The lorry was transporting tiles from Colombo to Jaffna and a vehicle transporting beer from Biyagama to Anuradhapura collided with each other. The lorry transporting the tiles was parked near the road when the container which came from behind collided with the lorry. No one was injured in the accident and police is suspecting that the driver may have fallen asleep while driving.

Ravi Karunanayake & 07 accused in bond case released on bail

Special three judge panel (Colombo High Court Trial-at-Bar) ordered to release former Minister Ravi Karunanayake and seven others today (April 1) who on bail who had been arrested and remanded over the third alleged bond scam amounting to Rs. 15 billion on March 31, 2016. It is on a cash bail of Rs. 10 lakhs each and two personal bails of Rs. 100 lakhs each.The bench rejected the plaintiffs’ request to remand the accused in custody till the end of the trial. Also the High Court Trial-at-Bar imposed a travel ban on all eight accused. The case was taken up today before a bench of Justices Amal Ranaraja, Namal Balalle and Aditya Patabendige.

Over 1kg of heroin found in Maradhana and Jaffna

Colombo Central Divisional Crime Investigation Unit had found 1kg and 78 g of heroin in shanty complex during a raid on the Maradana Courts Road today. Heroin was under Maradana police for futher investigations and itll be produced before the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court today Also police had found 10 million worth of heroin inside a house in the Vadukkoddai area in Kayts Jaffna. Police is suspecting that heroin was smuggled from India by sea.A 50 years old suspect was arrested and he will be remanded untill April 14th after being produced in the Mallakam Court.

Teacher from Ananda College infected with corona

M. Balasuriya, Public Health Inspectors’ (PHI) Union Secretary, stated that it is reported that a male teacher from Ananda College Colombo tested positive for COVID 19 yesterday (March 31) Teacher was attached to the school hostel and PCR tests are conducting for the students today.Also PHI s were investigating on the associates of the teacher.

Facebook bans the Voice of Donald Trump

Former US President Donald Trumps daughter-in-law Lara Trump has posted a video of herself interviewing Mr Trump on a range of issues. But the Facebook company has decided to remove the video from her account. Facebook has officially informed about the decisions to her. Facebook banned Mr Trump from its platform in January 7, a day after the Capitol riots by his supporters on the Capitol building in Washington. “We believe the risks of allowing the president to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great.” Facebook chief Mark Zuckerburg said defending the banning. Lara Trump, a new Fox News contributor, is married to Mr Trump’s son Eric.

UNESCO rejected the reservoir construction projects within the Sinharaja rain forest

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation UNESCO has rejected reservoir construction projects within the Sinharaja rainforest as it is a natural world heritage site. UNESCO Secretary General for Sri Lanka Dr. Punchinilame Meegaswatte states that the irrigation authorities and Minister Chamal Rajapaksa accepted decision about the project. Before the irrigation department proposed to construct a reservoir inside the Sinharaja rain forest in a idea with a divert water to the south-eastern parts of Sri Lanka for drinking and irrigation purposes. Sri Lanka has only two natural heritage sites. (Sinharaja and the central highlands) A landmass of five hectares within the Sinharaja forest will be damaged if the reservoir is built.

Sri Lankans illegally stayed and deported Switzerland and Germany returned

Twenty four Sri Lankans who were staying illegally in Switzerland and Germany arrived in Sri Lanka today morning(March 31). They arrived at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) after being deported and they were handed over to the Sri Lankan army for quarantine process. They illegally stayed in those countries since 2012 and 2013 They were deported after being produced in court for violating immigration laws. They will be handed over to the CID and the National Intelligence Unit for legal action after the quarantine period.

Two browsers containing Substandard oil seized; Trucks did not carry a Customs seal

Sri Lanka Customs Director General Major General G. Vijitha Ravipriyasaid that,the two bowsers containing substandard coconut oil was seized and handed over to Customs Authorities today. Dankotuwa police had seized two browsers yesterday and the Sri Lanka Customs Director General Major General G. Vijitha Ravipriya him self had inspected the bowsers and they were brought to the Customs under police protection this morning and the two drivers of the bowsers were also arrested by the Police. He also rejected the media reports that said saying trucks were sealed by the Customs and he clarified that the trucks did not carry a Customs seal. He also explained that seal belongs to the private companies which handled these stocks.
