Permission for polygamy of Muslim men in Sri Lanka
The Ministry of Justice has decided to include amendments to the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act, including making a policy decision to allow polygamy of Muslim men on strict conditions. As per the proposal made by the Ministry of Justice at its Cabinet Meeting held on 8th March 2021 on the recommendation of the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Legislative Drafting It was decided to ban polygamy of Muslim men, introduce new laws and abolish Khati courts. However, the Ministry of Justice points out that the decision has been opposed by the Muslim community. The Ministry of Justice is of the view that it is appropriate to implement the law in the Kathi courts as the submission of polygamy laws of the Muslim community to the District Courts is another reason for the legal delay. The Ministry of Justice has decided that only issues that cannot be resolved should be referred to the District Court.

Police have arrested a man for allegedly threatening to kill Lanka People’s Front MP Geetha Kumarasinghe. A 60-year-old resident of Thotakanatta has been arrested by the Uragasmanhandiya Police. The suspect had gone to the MP’s house and scolded her for not giving her a loan and threatened her with death, police said. The arrested suspect will be produced before court, police said.

A foreigner has died after falling from the top floor of a hotel
A foreigner has died after falling from the top floor of a hotel in Ella. The deceased was a 28 – year – old Czech national. His body is currently being treated at the Demodara Hospital. Police suspect that the accident had taken place yesterday morning (20) due to a slip. The magisterial inquiry into the body is scheduled to be held as soon as possible.

A man has been stabbed to death in the Ratmalana area. Police said the killing was the result of a long-running feud between the two. The victim was a 43 year old resident of Moratuwa. The suspect involved in the murder has been identified and has fled the area, police said.

Ships carrying fuel will arrive in the island from today within the next week.
The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) says that 5 ships carrying fuel will arrive in the island from today (20) within the next week. Its chairman Sumith Wijesinghe said that ships bring diesel, petrol and aviation fuel to Sri Lanka. Accordingly, there are sufficient stocks of fuel in the country, he said. The Chairman said that he was also ready to provide the required stocks of fuel to the Ceylon Electricity Board. But he said the board would have to pay him in rupees or so. Meanwhile, daily fuel demand has risen sharply. The Chairman of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation stated that the average daily fuel demand in the country is 6,000 metric tons. But yesterday, he said, demand had risen to 9,000 metric tons.

The Second Interim Report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the Evaluation of the Decisions of the Pre-Human Rights Commissions and Committees and the Future Action will be presented by Supreme Court Judge A.H.M. Do. Nawaz handed over to President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa at the Presidential Secretariat on the afternoon of the 18th. The President on January 21, 2021, appointed Supreme Court Judge Mr A.H.M.D Nawaz to investigate, investigate and report on the findings of commissions or committees appointed to investigate allegations of human rights and other violations of international humanitarian la, or to take appropriate action. The first report of the Commission was submitted to the President on July 21, 2021. In preparing the second 107-page report, the Commission made a number of recommendations based on the testimonies of 75 residents of the Jaffna and Kilinochchi districts who had experienced and associated with the war. The Paranagama Commission appointed in 2015 has immediately investigated the findings and recommended a case or compensation. Those who testified before the Commission requested the assistance of the Government to help them grow economically and have been recommended by the Commission for the same. They are not allowed for terrorist commemorate but, the commission has al recommended that the right to commemorate the death of a relative during the war privetly be granted , and that the final report be submitted to the President by June next year. Mr. Nawaz said. Secretary to the President Gamini Senarath was also present at the occasion.
