Veteran singer Desmond De Silva passes away

Legendarynger Desmond De Silva has passed away in Melbourne Australia yesterday.  He was age  77 at the time of his death. He was famous among the people because of a special song named “Sumihiri Pane”. He has performed in the Sri Lankan music industry as a singer and an entertainer for over four decades. Because of this he is often regarded as the “King of Baila” in Sri Lanka.

MP Diana Gamage has chased after a gas lorry to buy a gas cylinder

Samagi Jana Balawega MP  Diana Gamage has chased after a gas lorry to buy a gas cylinder. She states that she ran out of gas in her home and had to run into the streets searching for gas. She said that when she heard that there was gas in a distribution center in Pelawatta,  as soon as she went there she heard the stock run out and then went to a shop in Athurugiriya. She said that when she was on her way to Athurugiriya, she saw a gas lorry and followed it.

The foreigner who escaped from the airport

A foreign national who attempted to flee to Paris, France via Abu Dhabi has reportedly run out of the Katunayake International Airport when he was about to be arrested by the Immigration and Emigration Department. The foreign national was arrested this morning (10) following a joint operation by the Immigration and Emigration Department, Sri Lanka Air Force Commandos, Airport Security and Police while the foreigner in question was running up to the roof of the airport. The foreigner had arrived at the Katunayake International Airport at 02.45 this morning to board Etihad Airways flight EY-265 bound for Paris, France via Abu Dhabi.

All the students will attend school from today

The Ministry of Education states that from today (10) all students will be called to schools as usual and academic activities will commence. Secretary to the Ministry of Education Prof. Kapila Perera stated that the decision was taken on the advice of the Director-General of Health Services. The government had earlier taken steps to invite school children to school in several phases due to the epidemic situation. “However, from today all students will be called to school as usual and steps will be taken to close the school canteens,” said the Secretary to the Ministry, Prof. Kapila Perera. Meanwhile, the Public Health Inspectors’ Association says that with the resumption of academic activities in schools, more attention should be paid to the health of students.

Aung San Suu Ki sentenced to 4 years in prison

Aung San Suu Ki has been sentenced by a Myanmar military court to four years in prison.  Several charges have been filed against her, one of which is possession of “unauthorized” speech.  She is also accused of violating the country’s import and export laws and possessing the equipment and is also sentenced to two years in prison for the crime. The order was issued to pay both the sentences simultaneously

19 killed in apartment fire in America

At least 19 people, including nine children, have been killed in a fire that broke out in an apartment building in New York. Another 32 people were injured in the blaze, foreign media reported. The fire broke out on the second and third floors of a 19-storey building, and smoke billowed from each floor.  It is considered to be the worst accident in New York, USA in 30 years.

Zimbabwe cricket team arrives in Sri Lanka

 The Zimbabwean cricket team has arrived in the island to participate in the one-day cricket tournament. The Zimbabwean cricket team arrived in Sri Lanka this morning on a Qatar Airways flight.  There will be three one-day cricket matches between the two countries, all of which will be played day and night at the Pallekele International Stadium. The first ODI will be played on the 16th.

Veteran actor Robin Fernando’s last rites today

 The body of the late veteran actor Robin Fernando has been laid to rest at a private flower shop in Colombo.  His last rites will be performed at the Borella Cemetery this afternoon (09). Veteran actor Robin Fernando passed away yesterday (08).

A foreign couple who came to spend their honeymoon in court for taking drone photos

 An Indian couple has been fined Rs. 50,000 for pleading guilty to operating a drone illegally to obtain footage of the Weligama beach. Colombo Chief Magistrate Buddhika Sri Ragala  imposed the fine. The couple had arrived in Sri Lanka for their honeymoon, during which time they launched a drone off the coast of Weligama and took photos and videos of themselves. The couple was arrested by the Weligama Police on charges of operating an unauthorized drone off the coast of Weligama.  They were produced in court by the police on charges of violating the Civil Aviation Act.

A tractor has emerged from the Mullaitivu beach

It is reported that parts of a tractor hidden in the sand on the Puthumathalan beach in Mullaitivu have been found. The rear wheels of a tractor and several body parts of the tractor were found on the sand yesterday (08) and the residents of the area have informed the police. It is suspected that parts of a tractor that was washed away during the war or washed away during the tsunami disaster may have been washed ashore.
