Champions who adorned the motherland with gold and silver medals to the island

The Sri Lankan winners of the World Weightlifting Championship, which was held concurrently with the Commonwealth Games in Tuscan, Uzbekistan, arrived in the island this morning (19).

The Sri Lankan athletes who participated in the tournament had won five bronze medals including a gold and a silver.

Among them, Srimali Samarakoon of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura representing the Sri Lanka Weightlifting Women’s Team won a gold medal, Thimali Haputenna of the Polonnaruwa Weightlifting Club won a silver medal and Nadeeshani Rajapaksa of the Sri Lanka Air Force won a bronze medal.

Chinthana Vidanage and Indika Dissanayake of the Sri Lanka Navy, AUMM Wijesinghe of the Sri Lanka Air Force and Thilanga Palagasinghe of the Polonnaruwa Weightlifting Club won bronze medals representing the Sri Lanka Men’s Weightlifting Team.

The Sri Lankan men’s team won the third place at the World Championships.
