Sri Lankans illegally stayed and deported Switzerland and Germany returned

illegal immigrants

Twenty four Sri Lankans who were staying illegally in Switzerland and Germany arrived in Sri Lanka today morning(March 31). They arrived at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) after being deported and they were handed over to the Sri Lankan army for quarantine process. They illegally stayed in those countries since 2012 and 2013 They were deported after being produced in court for violating immigration laws. They will be handed over to the CID and the National Intelligence Unit for legal action after the quarantine period.

Two browsers containing Substandard oil seized; Trucks did not carry a Customs seal

Sri Lanka Customs Director General Major General G. Vijitha Ravipriyasaid that,the two bowsers containing substandard coconut oil was seized and handed over to Customs Authorities today. Dankotuwa police had seized two browsers yesterday and the Sri Lanka Customs Director General Major General G. Vijitha Ravipriya him self had inspected the bowsers and they were brought to the Customs under police protection this morning and the two drivers of the bowsers were also arrested by the Police. He also rejected the media reports that said saying trucks were sealed by the Customs and he clarified that the trucks did not carry a Customs seal. He also explained that seal belongs to the private companies which handled these stocks.

postal workers on a countrywide sick leave

Sri Lanka Post and Telecommunication Services Union has launched a countrywide sick leave trade union action from yesterday (March 30) The strike was launched based on several demands including government’s decision to recruit officers againsting the standard recruitment procedures, the Union’s Chief Chinthaka Bandara said. Even the Postal Department has cancelled the leave of all postal workers the trade union action will be processed, Joint Postal Trade Union (JPTU) said.

Another suspect arrested for hacking in to bank accounts in US

A 41 years old man from Jaffna has been arrested for money laundering by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) yesterday ( March 30). He was arrested after Rs. 13.4 million had been deposited to one of his bank accounts by an individual from the US. Several people in the US and Canada had taken money by hacking into various persons’ bank accounts in the US and transfer the money to various persons’ bank accounts in Sri Lanka. Then the hackers withdraw the money back to their bank accounts and gave a commission to local bank account holders, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said . CID launched a special investigation after complaint recieved about money laundering in April last year. According to the complainant, Rs. 140 million had been deposited to several bank accounts in Sri lanka. The CID arrested more than 30 persons since April 2020 over the case specially those in Nothern parts of Sri Lanka.

India’s protesting farmers ; Sees no sign of end

The indias biggest protests begun in November sparks after government introduced three new laws to the farmers. Even though several rounds of talks happened between the farmers and government nothing seems to be resolved. Around tens of thousands of farmers have been camping out on highways on the outskirts of Delhi protesting since November. ” Government is not listening to us, government is so stubborn” , Farmers said. They also explained “those farmers under 10 acres,they ll die”. The tension has increasing over the months as fight between goverment and the farmers they explained this as the fight between future and past farming methods. And also this has become the biggest challenge faced by the indian prime minister Narendra Modhi. This begun to opposition to three new laws started last year;1 . Giving farmers freedom of choice to sell anyone in anywhere in India Making laws how farmers draw up contracts with businesses Allows privert businesses to stock basic products Now farmers sell their products through local government regulated markets they guarantee the minimum price with that process. Even under the new law these wholesale markets would be excist but farmers can sell their products directly to big businesses. But farmers assures that when the companies involved the price guarantee will ve disappeared. Second law explained how to coporate with the big business like setting a price for the crops before they are planted. Farmers fear with the third law as the privert companies has ability to store they can buy bulk from the crops and this will affect the price badly. But former government economic adviser Arvind Virmani says that this is all about giving freedom to farmers.

COVID 19 positive cases increasing in Jaffna

The Jaffna COVID 19 positive clusters groving gradualy with identifing more infected people daily, The National Operations Centre for the Prevention of Covid-19 said after finding new 17 cases yesterday morning. More people had already found positive but the officials a waiting for the exact number of positive case’s after the PCR test results received today(March 31), the Divisional Secretary of the Jaffna Divisional Secretariat S. Sutharsan said. It is reported that over 1,000 families in Jaffna have been in isolation as a precautionary measure and weddings, gatherings and other events were banned in Jaffna until further notice.

Police officer ate bribed money

A policeman had swallowed two Rs. 5000 notes which he had accepted as a bribe when he was confronted by bribery officials yesterday (March 29) He was a Chief Inspector attached to the Weliweriya Police Minor Offences branch. He had initially accepted a sum of Rs.15,000 to resolve a vehicle dispute. But he had swallowed Rs.10,000 when he was caught. He was admitted to the Gampaha Hospital where he is under treatment to remove cash notes from the body.
