99% of covid infections found in the country is Omicron – Ministry of Health

According to the Ministry of Health, 98% or 99% of the cases reported these days are from those infected with the omicchron virus. A senior official said the Delta variety was on the verge of extinction and a research conducted by the University of Sri Jayewardenepura has revealed this. The Ministry of Health stated that there is a sufficient number of beds for the admission of corona infected people. The Ministry of Health said that although some people claimed that there was a shortage of intensive care beds, it was untrue. Reservoir water shortage: Will there be a power cut? – An explanation from the Public Utilities Commission

The Public Utilities Commission says that water in some reservoirs will remain in place for another two weeks or a month to generate electricity from water. Its chairman Janaka Ratnayake stated that this was revealed at a discussion held at the Public Utilities Commission yesterday (12) on how to provide electricity to the people without disconnection. Janaka Ratnayake said that if the consumption of electricity is not restricted, there will be a definite power cut in the future. Janaka Ratnayake also said that steps will be taken to reduce the supply of electricity to business premises and provide that electricity to the public in the future. He noted that power generation in  private companies should be done by generators. Meanwhile, power generation at the Kerawalapitiya power plant has come to a complete standstill.  The General Manager of the Ceylon Electricity Board, Dr. Rohantha Abeysekera stated that this situation has arisen due to a technical fault. He urged the people to use electricity sparingly considering the current situation.

The Paddy Marketing Board is buying paddy for higher prices

The Paddy Marketing Board has so far purchased 31,600 metric tons of paddy. Its Chairman Neil de Alwis stated that paddy has been purchased from Ampara, Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Anuradhapura. One kilogram of Nadu paddy costs Rs. 90, a kilogram of Samba paddy Rs. 92 and a kilogram of Kiri Samba paddy Rs. 95, the Chairman said. Mr. Neil de Alwis said that if paddy is delivered to the Paddy Marketing Board branches, a kilo of Nadu paddy will be bought at Rs. 92, a kilo of Samba paddy at Rs. 94 and a kilo of Kirisamba paddy at Rs. 97.

Diplomat Julie Chung was appointed the new US Ambassador to Sri Lanka

Diplomat Julie Chung was appointed the new US Ambassador to Sri Lanka on Thursday (Feb. 10). She was sworn in by Deputy Secretary of State In front of Wendy R.Sherman. Announcing the appointment of a new US Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Sherman said in a Twitter message that Chung’s prestigious career in the State Department and her outstanding leadership would make her the best choice to represent the American people and advance the US-Sri Lanka partnership. She was born in Seoul, South Korea, fluent in Korean, Japanese, Spanish and Khmer, Chung was previously director of the State Department’s Office for Japanese Affairs. She has served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and as Economic Adviser at the US Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand. Chung also served as the Transitional Coordinating Chief of Staff at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq. She has also served at the U.S. Embassies in Colombia, Vietnam and Japan, and at the U.S. Consulate General in Guangzhou, China. She is also a Pickering Fellow. Chung holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, San Diego and a Masters degree from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs.

He points out that a mandatory condition for this is that 70% of the population should complete the vaccination by the middle of this year. He added that it is expected that the target will be reached by June-July this year.

Sri Lankan students gets Opportunity to learn 10 foreign languages

Piyal Nishantha de Silva, State Minister of Women and Child Development, Pre-School and Primary Education, School Infrastructure and Education Services said that a series of online programs are planned to provide access to foreign language learning for school children in the country. In collaboration with the London School of Executive Limited, UK, the project will enable school children to learn English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, Russian and Arabic in accordance with international standards. The Minister of State said that this program is expected to be launched concurrently with the main event to be held on the occasion of Women’s Day. He said this while he was speaking at a media briefing held at the Ministry premises on February 11.

A gym built for the public closed for an hour for the usage of a powerful minister

It has been decided to close an exercise centre built for the public for one hour daily for a powerful minister, and ministers name yet not revealed media reports. The gym was recently opened in response to a long-standing demand for a place for urban residents to exercise. However, the relevant Minister had instructed the Municipal Council, which controls the gym, to make arrangements so that no one else could come at the time of his arrival as he was exercising there. Accordingly, it has been decided to close the centre to the public for an hour between 5 pm and 6 pm.
