Old busses are submerged to sea

The Navy has initiated a program to submerge old vehicles in the sea in order to enhance and beautify the biodiversity of the North Sea and to create an artificial ecosystem.

The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has initiated this project using the beaches off the islands of Jaffna and the Navy is taking the lead in this project.

Accordingly, as a first step, four obsolete buses in the Jaffna-Dulph seas were placed safely on the seabed by naval officers of the Northern Naval Command aboard the Ports Corporation’s Sea Mining Ship.

20 buses have been set aside for such seabed deposits so far in an attempt to create a new and more prosperous environment by creating artificial substrates on the seabed near the beach.
